Guest guest
Aloha: I recently posted a video of my Ashtanga Yoga practice at Nancy Gilgoff's House of Yoga & Zen on Maui. I have been a student of David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff here on Maui for 30+ years. This is an informal documentary of my practice over a ten year period whenI was in my 50s. I am now 65, still practicing regularly, even after open heart surgery in 2001 to replace a failing aortic valve. Here's a link to the video: Here's a link to my 2003 article " Awake At Last: " http://www.ashtanga.com/html/JFarticle.html Hou'oli Makahiki Hou (Happy New Year)
Guest guest
Many thanks for the link - it was great to see those classes, and the old geezer among all those bendy young bodies ! I am 60 this year and still practising too, although with quite a few modifications these days, due to ashtanga-related injuries. :-( Stll, most teachers seem happy for me to be practising daily, even if I have can't stick to the orthodox sequence anymore. For me, ongoing practice is about letting go of expectations and ambitions, and just doing what I can do that day. I have the stamina to go through Primary, and to play with other asanas, but not the flexibility any more to do all the asanas 'correctly'. We are expecting Nancy here at Purple Valley in Goa in a couple of weeks, and I am looking forward very much to seeing her again, and working with her. She has much good advice for how to adapt ashtanga for older bodies. Guest guest
David Williams is doing a workshop at Kripalu Yoga Center in May entitled Ashtanga Yoga for Life. He will emphasize how to avoid those injuries as you progress through your years of practice. As he says " If it feels good, you're doing it right, if it hurts - change it. Guest guest
Namaste Annie, Old age is a relative term. If you compare yourself with BKS Iyengar, who is 90, you are pretty young. If he can still do a headstand for 30 minutes continously, u can also practice asanas. You might require some more pratice time thats all. Dont stress urself but increase ur practice time. You can always do pranayam(breathing exercises.) The longer you do, the better it is. Relax when you feel exhausted and start again. You will see a change in yourself. Om Shanti, Sandeep. ________________________________ anniegurton <annie ashtangayoga Friday, January 2, 2009 6:55:11 AM ashtanga yoga Re: Ashtanga Yoga Practice at House of Yoge & Zen, Maui Many thanks for the link - it was great to see those classes, and the old geezer among all those bendy young bodies ! Guest guest
Namaste Sandeep, Age is relative up to a point ... there is no doubt that, just like an older face is a bit more lined, older ligaments and tendons lose flexibility and become a bit like old elastic bands. I certainly do intend to continue asana work until I drop, however I have had to 'let go' of certain asanas and bindings which I simply can't do any more, without causing pain and damage. That that, obviously, would be stupid. So, I amend, I modify, and I continue. Increasing practice time is not always an option when one has work and family commitments. I usually find 90 minutes a day as much as I can dedicate to asana work. As for other yogic practices, I have an advanced meditation practice, and do some pranayam although I have to be careful not to retain inbreaths because that gives me insomnia. Holding of out-breath is fine. It is a fascinating journey, and I am so grateful that I have yoga in my life. My thanks go primarily to John and Lucy Scott, my first teachers, as well as to Guruji and Sharath. Guest guest
Aloha, Very inspiring! I have been fortunate enough to meet and practice with Nancy twice and can't say enough about her. I'll bet you count your blessings thousands of times a day for 30+ years with her! Within the past two years, my health has failed, and I haven't practiced. My hope (and I believe it to be happening) is that my health shall return. I would take any capacity ~ just to physically practice would undo stress and negative energy. Throughout these years, I have taken one of the many gems from Nancy to help. The LovingKindness Meditation. For this, I am forever grateful. Jack, you are young, healthy, revitalized from your surgery and full of life. Thank you for sharing your beautiful journey.
