Guest guest
Happy holidays everyone – I hope you are all doing well. I get nauseated when I hold downward facing dog for more then 2 breaths. The longer I hold the position, the more I feel like I may throw up. This happens on an empty stomach, on a full stomach, and any place in between. It happens when I do the pose at night or in the morning. I have only been doing yoga for 10 weeks – but this seems to be getting worse as time goes on not better. Any suggestions? I am female and not pregnant. This does not feel like heartburn either - just straight nausea. Thank you, Avaria
Guest guest
Hi there, Avaria....couldn't help but not put my two cents in since I suffer from certain anxieties and other little glitches.....If your doctor cannot give you a physical reason for your nausea, I would say start being the boss over your mind. You can give in to thinking you are nauseated and it will get the best of you and you will throw up.....HOWEVER.....if you take control and tell your little mind that you feel fine and you love doing downward dog and to stop messing with your head AND think of pleasant things...anything you want....but do NOT think of feeling nauseated.....Do NOT entertain the thought at all....You must overcome...marilyn ________________________________ Avaria <avaria_x ashtangayoga Saturday, December 27, 2008 9:50:08 PM ashtanga yoga Nauseated during downward facing dog Happy holidays everyone – I hope you are all doing well. Guest guest
Hey Avaria Sounds to me like your body is just readjusting; rebalancing. These things do begin to feel worse before getting better. Stick with it gently and patiently and you will heal and begin to feel better and stronger. The more you do the practice the more you learn to trust in its theraputic and healing powers. Dont worry - i'm sure the nauseous feelings will pass. Take care. martin ashtangayoga avaria_x Sun, 28 Dec 2008 02:50:08 +0000 ashtanga yoga Nauseated during downward facing dog Happy holidays everyone – I hope you are all doing well. Guest guest
Dear fellow yogini, There are two probable causes of your nausea: Consider firstly a digestive one. This would be caused either by eating too soon before yoga (I recommend not eating for at least two to three hours before a practice) or possibly dehydration. If the latter, dry to slowly drink up to a pint of water in the two hours preceding your practice. I recommend warm or room temperature. Herbal tea would be a fine substitute. Another possible cause is air in your digestive tract, but I would expect this to cause you nausea in more positions. Do you only feel nauseous in downward dog or are there others? The second cause would be muscular - you are pushing your body into a position that your stomach area is uncomfortable in for some reason internally. This can be caused by pushing or contracting any of your abdominal muscles inappropriately during the pose. Correcting this involves working out what is wrong with your posture. I would suggest really practicing your U & #7693; & #7693; & #299;y & #257;na Bandha whilst standing at rest. Then try your downward dog. Concentrate on elongating the distance between between your shoulders and hips. Try it with both your Bandha and all your abdominal muscles relaxed. Then try gently introducing U & #7693; & #7693; & #299;y & #257;na Bandha into the pose? Does this change things. I would also add that asking your teacher to analyse your downward dog might help you in this. Kind regards, Daenelle.
