Guest guest Posted January 13, 2009 Report Share Posted January 13, 2009 Hello all, I've been practicing yoga for about 5 years, and have recently found the Ashtanga Yoga style (which I love). I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question. Unfortunately I don't have the means to attand practices with a teacher, so a lot of my study is through books, etc. My question are with the Bandhas. (1) What are the purposes of the Bandhas? (2) Is one supposed to have all locks at once or separately? (3) Can one practice these locks when not doing yoga (e.g. in traffic, etc)? Any information you might provide would be appreciated. Guest guest Posted January 14, 2009 Report Share Posted January 14, 2009 Chris, As a relative newcomer, this is a question I also asked myself recently and the locks do seem to help with many of the asanas. It is possible to use them in combination and doing so adds greatly to the recognition of the need to work core strength. They do appear to be something that can be practiced at any time and I would encourage you to play about during your practice: all too often, " ashtanga " classes can include ten minutes of straight up " abs " or core strength while all too little consideration is given to the use of the bandhas during asana practice. On a side note, I am currently studying with Lino Miele in Kovalam and hope to get to the bottom of this aspect of ashtanga during the next few weeks. I'll post what I learn.
