Guest guest
Obviously you can do anything you want. That being said, closing the hands eliminates much of the work that is at the heart of pincha. Also -- bear in mind, pincha is traditionally practiced in the middle of second series. I believe you indicated that at this time you're only doing first up to navasana. Part of what first series does is develop a strong core -- this makes possible later on poses such as pinchmyurasana. Sounds like you're putting the cart before the horse here. Strongly recommend that you get yourself a teacher! Guest guest
If it's comfortable, yes you should do it. Asana means comfortable seat, be creative and have fun with your practice! alma_shiva_sat_chit_ananda wrote: > > > MM everyone! > > Does anyone know if you can do the forearm balance with your hands > closed as in the Dolphins exercise? > > It would feel much more comfortable and secure. > > Thanks a lot > Alma > > Ps. Guest guest
The Forearm Balance Posted by: " alma_shiva_sat_chit_ananda " universal_mother_nua alma_shiva_sat_chit_ananda Sun Aug 2, 2009 8:51 pm (PDT) MM everyone! Does anyone know if you can do the forearm balance with your hands closed as in the Dolphins exercise? It would feel much more comfortable and secure. Thanks a lot Alma Ps. Hope I am not bothering you with my many many many questions... I am really so thankful for your time and for hearing me... I reall< do appreciate it a lot. Love, Alma ------------------- Hi Alma just offering an opinion here. one of the candidates for a pageant (Miss America type of pageant) did a pincha mayurasana as her display and placed her hand on the mat that way. if it works for her and for you, great. however, it won't be approved by a teacher of traditional ashtanga asana. so it depends where you are planning to do your version - at home or in a shala, and the background of the teacher in whose room you're planning to do it. you could get called on it and told it's not the correct way, or you could be left to do your own variation. cheers, Arturo
Guest guest
Ok, thanks for that.... I guess I will keep on doing this variation (at home :-)) until I might feel comfortable enough to try the 'correct' version.
Guest guest
In my view its not a matter of being " approved " by a teacher or not. Its a matter of understanding what you are doing and why. In this case, pincha properly done requires quite a bit of shoulder opening, opening in the upper back, and a fair amount of core strength to keep it all stable and aligned. What you are proposing is a modification that allows you to avoid shoulder and back opening and requires somewhat less core strength/stability. In my view, there are better modifications involving blocks and belts that make it easier to do the pose while facilitating the development of the requisite strength and opening. Doesn't matter what a " traditional " ashtanga teacher would think/say - unless you are doing second up to this pose. Guest guest
Have you ever tried doing it the correct way using a strap just above the elbows tied at shoulder width distance? Really helps to train the arms to be in the correct position and to build strength in the appropriate muscles. It's very supportive. --- On Tue, 4/8/09, alma_shiva_sat_chit_ananda <universal_mother_nua wrote: alma_shiva_sat_chit_ananda <universal_mother_nua ashtanga yoga Re: The Forearm Balance ashtangayoga Received: Tuesday, 4 August, 2009, 8:15 PM Ok, thanks for that....
