For example Tom?  Just curious... thanks,

Alma

Actually, that wasn't my post.

I personally don't think the phone book is a good idea.

I've seen two people dislocate their shoulders using blocks/phone books to

assist jump through.

Problem is people try to hurl their legs through and lack the

control/strength to " float " forward.

There are more systematic approaches to develop requisite strength and

flexibility to make this easy.

I asked my teacher recently about how improving these jump through, she told me

it was an obsession of many Western students, to have more style, and that I

should not care so much about it!

Ok. This is more easily demonstrated than explained.

You jump forward as though you were going to jump through with your legs

crossed rather than straight.

As your feet come towards you hands, they will most likely touch the mat and

not go through between your hands.

When your feet touch your butt should still be off the mat. Balance/rest on

your feet (usually the sides or top of the feet since they are usually

crossed). Without bringing your butt down to the mat shift your hands so

that they are behind your hips and providing support for your body (i.e.

your hips are now in front of your arms) (like tolasana with your legs

crossed, but not in lotus and your feet touching). Then press down with

your hands lifting legs/feet off the mat and keeping butt off the mat while

you gently straighten your legs out in front of you (basically you wind up

doing a supported L a few inches off the floor). Then lower yourself down

to the mat.

Over time in the initial part you can bring your hips higher and control

the jump forward until it goes in slow motion.

Also, over time, your legs will not touch and will simply pass through your

arms. Eventually you can staighten legs more and more.

Give yourself 3-6 years (or more) to get it.

hi Alma

my friend Anthony writes a blog that he used to call ashtanga jump through. he

then renamed it to ashtanga at home. just google " grimmly ashtanga yoga at

home blog " . i just don't remember the exact link and cannot access it at

the moment. there is a link to his site in the side bar of mine,

cronyogitect.blogspot.com. he wrote extensively of his determination over

one year to get jump throughs down correctly. what Tom is referring to

is bhandas and knowledge of what the hips are supposed to be doing in

jump throughts. jump throughs are a basic knowledge that teachers pass

on to you.

cheers,

Arturo
