Guest guest
Well, First I'll let it be known that I think humanity should pollute as little as possible and that we should treat nature with far more respect than is the case today. After all CO2 in too large doses is not very healthy for the human organsim. Furthermore there are real issues in terms of on-going climate change in terms of potential rising sea-levels, low-land inhabited areas and many more environmental concerns relating to supporting human population - though millenia the climate has been changing, it is an illusion to think that we should live on a static earth with unchanging climate for the rest of history. Recently we've had the climate conference COP15 in this country. Heads of state jetted in from all over the world to the extent that all the airplanes couldn't be placed in our major airport in Copenhagen but had to be flown to other airports in the country and in Sweden fro keeping, then flown back to Copenhagen as the conference ended. In another six months or so, they'll be jetting to Germany, and in a year from now they'll repeat the performance going to Mexico. This strikes me as odd and inconsistent behaviour when compared to the urgency with which the same heads of state declared their world-saving agenda. That asides, I've been reading the climate reports from IPCC and with a background in engineering and statistics I can tell you that the scientific evidence of climate change being caused solely by man-made carbon emissions is very shaky and circumstantial, in fact it is statistical non-signigficant. After all, that is why the conclusions are reached by Consensus. The problem is that all the important conclusions are backed by a 90% probability which is then translated into the phrase " very likely " . In statistics however, a 90% probability means that out of 10 conclusions based on that probability, 8 of the 10 are wrong, only 2 are correct. To achive statistical significance, you need at least a 95% probability. Adding to that, proponents of alternative theories have been ridiculed, vilified and denied access to publish their scientific findings in the relevant scientific circles. I can recomend the book " The Chilling Stars " by Henrik Svensmark and Nigel Calder which offers a very convincing argument that there are several factors not considered by the IPCC that have an impact on climate changes. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chilling-Stars-Theory-Climate-Change/dp/1840468157/ref=s\ r_1_1?ie=UTF8 & s=books & qid=1262688649 & sr=8-1 Should you go or shouldn't you go? The decision is yours. Namaste Jens --- Den man 4/1/10 skrev qe_u <no_reply >: Fra: qe_u <no_reply > Emne: ashtanga yoga Re: Environmental concerns. Til: ashtangayoga Dato: mandag 4. januar 2010 16.09 I've been thinking the same thing, and I really hesitate to go to Mysore, as long as I have a lot more to learn from well qualified teachers who live and work a lot closer to home... and in the end it will of course depend on my own dedication to the practice, if I go or not. Another way (not flying) would be to go by train, or bicycle, as I live in Europe. It's a long way, and the bicycle option would for sure be a very time-consuming 'pilgrimage'. If I ever go, I think I would like to stay for a long time and learn as much as I possibly can. So, if an authorization level of practice/learning/teaching was to become a goal for me, I think I would probably quit my job and stay for years... that would mean work and study in India, not just vacation visit to practice a few weeks, and then go home again. ashtangayoga , " kneejerkpatriot " <kneejerkpatriot wrote: > > hello to the Ashtanga world. > My name is Chris I'm a regular practitioner, preparing to depart for Mysore on my 6th visit. And that's the rub. I'm struggling with my conscience over flying. Climate change looks like the real deal and I'm looking long and hard at my part in it. Any words of advice, wisdom or humour, really, any points of view welcome. > Namaste. > ---
