Guest guest
I have been badly injured three times due to overly forceful adjustments! I would like to know if this has happened to others and how they handled the situation with the teacher. I told two of the teachers that were responsible and they would not readily assume responsibility.
Guest guest
Both my knees were severely injured when I was adjusted in Marchiyasana B & D over and over. It took almost a year and a half to recover but the pain still comes back once in a while. One of the most important I learnt was that people might have flexibility but not the strength. I have learnt more about my body and now know when to stop teachers before they start adjusting me. Guest guest
I too am going thru much knee pain not as a result of yoga injury but from an old skiing injury that yoga brings back up again. I found some help from a company called Mendmeshop.com and they sell various products. One that I purchased about 6 weeks ago and have been using daily is called the Inferno Wrap. It is well made and provides infra red heat that penetrates below the surface of the skin and I believe it is working. My knee is remarkably stronger and now I am much more comfortable in lotus and other knee wrenching postures. It is worth your time to investigate the web site. Guest guest
Hi, sorry to hear you've been injured a few times! Well, I'm an ashtanga teacher and from the other side....it is always very helpful to hear from a student when they feel the adjustment is going too far. However, having said that, I realize that many students won't tell (or perhaps don't even know) when it is too far. I've gotten in the habit of asking the student while doing an adjustment if it feels ok and if I know places where the pulling SHOULD NOT be, I'll inform the student. I also found from a few students that they were slowly being injured because they were feeling the stretch in the wrong place and they just figured it was normal. In short, what I'm trying to say.... please let the teacher know when it is going too far. I would think that most teachers would respect and appreciate this information. Good luck in recovery and continued learning. Guest guest
Any teacher who adjusts you in away that causes a severe injury, is not a good teacher. A good teacher observes you and gives you proper adjustments based on your progress. In response to the person who has been repeatedly injured by forcefull adjustments: i respectfully offer that you should tell anyone adjusting you immediately if they are going too far or causing you pain. If i feel, i am being pushed too far, i quietly signal my teacher to ease off. I think it is the student's responsibility as well as the teacher's to prevent injuries from happening. Most of all, find yourself a really good teacher and stick with her/him. There are a lot of people out there " teaching " who really should not. Guest guest
Don't let people give you overly forceful adjustments!!! Tell them stop immediatly!!! I have only had one bad adjustment and it was 100% my fault for letting them do it. It took one time for me to learn to trust myself and speak up. Don't let yourself get intimadated by these Ashtanga teachers. Even if they have insurance as someone stated, the injury will follow you FOREVER. Get another teacher if they will not respect your wishes. I am a teacher and I have had people respectfully tell me enough was enough and I back off. I know that I can only guess at what is happening in their body while they have the inside scoop. I always start slow and increase pressure. I ask the student when to stop. Many Ashtanga teachers don't do this they do what their teacher did before them and they assume it is okay. There are big name Ashtanga teachers, certified, that have injured people. Don't ever make assumptions that they know your body better then you. Shanna

Guest guest
You are absolutely right Shanna! Thanks so much for your input. I am currently living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I have yet to find a teacher that I trust or that I think is good. Some teachers here insist on giving forceful adjustments! Guest guest
You are absolutely right, Nick. I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I think most people that are teaching here should not be. Sometimes it only takes a few seconds to injure someone with an overly forceful adjustment and by the time one tells the teacher to back off it is too late. That is what happened to me. ________________________________ nruechel <ruechel ashtangayoga Fri, March 19, 2010 8:20:53 AM Re: ashtanga yoga injuries from ashtanga adjustments Any teacher who adjusts you in away that causes a severe injury, is not a good teacher. Guest guest
yes practice on your own - sure listen to others, learn from others but the real beauty in this practice comes from practicing on your own.. practice outside if where you are is warm enough.. who needs adjustments?? yoga is a still point of harmony between mind, body and breath - who cares if one can bind - it makes no difference if you can - its all about breathing with gentle attention - not the forcing of the body to achieve some ideal :) ashtangayoga apreslacan2002 Fri, 19 Mar 2010 12:00:44 -0700 Re: ashtanga yoga Re:injuries from ashtanga adjustments You are absolutely right Shanna!
