Guest guest
The following is an extract of a conversation regarding jvara-s with a friend. AV - atharva veda bhaiShajya shAstrins - Experts in ancient Indian medicine/Ayurveda --------- The three headed shiva jvara: The bhAgavataM and viShNu purANa describes it(shiva jvara) as 3 headed. bhAgavathaM says that viShNu jvara defeated shiva jvara when they were used in the conflict regarding bAna. The shiva purANa (chapter 54 rudra saMhitA) gives the reverse picture. It states that one of the astras used in the battle between kR^iShNa devakIputra and rudra is the tripAda- jvarAstra (54.16-17) as well as kR^ityAs. First devakIputra sent a jvarAstra that caused a malarial fever(54.26). rudra countered it with his own jvarAstra and the malarial missile of the yAdava fled in terror eulogizing rudra. It is said who reads this narrative is freed from that jvara. The viShNu purANa concedes that the saMkarShaNa was severely tormented by the raudra fever missile till he took refuge with vAsudeva. jvara in general: The gopatha brAmaNa of the AV mentions that the wrath of rudra that destroyed the yaj~Na became the jvara. This is further detailed in the mahAbhArata account of the destruction of prajApati's yaj~Na: http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m12/m12b110.htm charaka and other bhaiShajya shAstrins(i.e. experts in ancient Indian medicine)indeed mention that fever is the manifestation of rudra. In the Ayurvedic text bhelA saMhita: " 46. fever arising from the anger of the great Lord (Shiva) has been previously mentioned by great sages. Therefore, for the sake of liberation from fever, one should worship R^iShabha dhvaja " ------------------------- sa
