Thanking You, Yours Sincerely, For NSSBS Sri Dharmalingeswarar Temple - An Overview Sri Dharmalingeswarar Temple is adorning the southern tip of the temples-map of Nanganallur, a flourishing calm cultural southern suburb of Chennai, TamilNadu, South India. The temple is at a distance of about 2 km from market area, and is very easily accessible from all sides. This temple was known in ancient times as Dhanmisar Semponkoil, as inferred from a stone inscription found in the temple. This inscription dates this temple's existence to the sixth year of rule of the Great King, Râja Râja Cholâ (i.e., 991 A.D.).The granite sanctum sanctorum of this temple along with the moolavar (Sri Dhanmisar) came to be discovered from an earthern mound covered with shrubs, only during late 1960s. Since then, the name and fame of this temple have grown from strength to strength and travelled to far-off regions. The temple is undergoing steady expansion, strictly according to âgama sâstrâs, right from the day Sri Dhanmisar revealed Himself in this place - thanks to the devotees who have been regularly contributing small amounts for the improvement and upkeep of the temple, in the absence of any major property or resources or endowments or big-donations. Perhaps, the Lord here is in constant communion more with the ordinary devotees and blessing them, rather than a chosen few! A new 3-tier Râjagopuram was constructed at the Eastern entrance to the temple, and kumbhâbhishekham (the third during the 20th century), was performed on 10:09:2000. The Dwajasthambam was renovated and consecrated on 26:08:2002. The inner circumambulation area was laid with marble slabs during 2005. A mantapam for the Tirukkalyânam of deities and also for religious and cultural functions was readied during 2006. Utsava moorthies have been consecrated for Sri Bhairavar and Sri Veerabhadrar on 12:04:2007. A new 5-tier Râjagopuram has been planned at the south entrance to the temple. The devotees thronging the temple on pradosham and other festival days is steadily increasing, bearing testimony to the ever-increasing grace of Iswara who has blessed us all by making this temple one of His specially chosen abodes. One could frequently hear instances of miracles occuring and wishes getting fullfilled, from His devotees who have absolutely surrendered to Him. There are many auspicious days that are celebrated with devotion and religious fervour in this Temple. The most important function is the annual purification ceremony, called Vârshika Pavithrotsavam, which is performed every year on Âvani Ârudrâ day, strictly as prescribed in âgamâs and also as mentioned in many ancient Tamil and Sanskrit scriptures. Apart from that, annual events include (i) Chandi Homam during Navarâtri, (ii) Lakshârchani to Ambâl during Navarâtri, (iii) Sri Dharmalingeswarar Tirukkalyânam on Panguni Uthiram day (iv) Special Abhishekams and Poojas on MahâSivarâtri day, (v) Sankâbhishekam on the first Kârthikai Somavâram, (vi) Vaikâsi Visâkam and Skanda Shashti celebrations for Lord Subrahmanyâ along with Tirukkalyânam, (vii) Hanumath Jayanthi (viii) Vinâyaka Chaturthi (ix) Six Natarâjar Abhishekams on prescribed days every year, etc.. Regular Poojas are, of course, being performed on all Pradosham days, on every monthly Sivarâtri day, on all Sankatahara Chatuthi days, on every Paurnami (Abhishekam for Ambâl), on all Sukhla Shashtis (Abhishekam for Sri Subrahmanyar), on every Krishna Ashtami (Abhishekam & Sahasranâmam for Sri Bhairavar), on every Tiruvadhirai nakshatram day (Tiruvâchaka Potri Sahasranâmam for Sri Dharmalingeswarar), on all Tiruvona nakshatram day (Sahasranâmam for Sri MahaVishnu), on every Moola nakshatram day (Abhishekam Sri Anjaneyar), on all first Tuesdays of the month (Satru samhâra moola mantra trisati archani for Sri Subrahmanyar), on all other Tuesdays (Sahasranâmam for Sri Subrahmanyar), on all first Sundays (Rahukâla abhishekam for Sri Durgâ), on all second Sundays (Ekâdasa Rudrâbhishekam), on every third Sunday (Sahasranâmam for Sri Suryanarayanamurthi, the presiding deity of Navagrahas), on all fourth Sundays (Abhishekam & Sahasranâmam for Veerabhadrar), on every third Thursday (Sahasranâmam for Sri Dakshinâmurthi) etc.. The grace of the deities installed and worshipped in this ancient temple is, no doubt, being experienced by one and all who are associtated with this temple in its sacred maintenance and improvement, and also by those who throng its precincts for worship. Worshipping in this temple and participation in the tiruppanis have brought in peace and prosperity to many. May Lord Dharmalingeswara bless us all.
