Guest guest
Dear devotees, Jagatguru of Sringeri Sri Bharati Thirtha Mahaswami has just declared the date of Mahasivaratri this year. It is 5th March 2008 instead of 6th. This is for the information of the devotees of ambaal and siva. With regards, sriram Save all your chat conversations. Find them online. Guest guest
This depends on location. Books like vaidyanaatha diixitiiyam spell out the rules that go into play in determining this. For instance, we had some problems in 2006 in determining the date of sivaratri and the following rules were used: =========== 2006 ================ This is from shivarAtri nirNaya prakaraNa of vaidyanAtha dIxiitIyam. Because in austin, chaturdashi is a kShaya tithi and skips both nishiitha kaala. vaidyanatha.ambaa.org (kaala kaaNDaa PDF file) yadaa puurvedyuH nishiithAdUrdhva pravR^ittaa chaturdashii When chaturdashi happens after the nishiitha kala on the previous day [nishiithaaduurdhva = nishiithaat + uurdhva] kShaya vashaat paredyuH nishiithaadarvaageva samaaptaa (when due to decay ends before the nishiita kAla of next day) tadaa purvedyuH pradoSha-nishiitha vyAptiyorubhayoraNya sambhavaat then in the previous day since chaturdashi happens outside the pradoSha and nishiitha kaala [yAptiyorubhayoraNya = vyaaptiyor ubhayor anya, so it shoud be anya not aNya?) paredyuH pradoSha vyaaptirekasya sambavaat cha in the next day if it happens only during the pradoSha kaala paraviddha eva graahyaa One should take only the paraviddhA (that is the tithi that is connected the next tithi). In other words the next day. viddhA is a technical term, a tithi connected with previous tithi is puurva viddhaa and connected with next is para viddhaa. ================ With thanks, Ravi Mayavaram On Tue, Feb 26, 2008 at 4:30 AM, venkata sriram < sriram_sapthasathi wrote: > Dear devotees, > > Jagatguru of Sringeri Sri Bharati Thirtha Mahaswami has just declared the > date of Mahasivaratri this year. Guest guest
Sub: MahaShivRatri dates for 2008 I am now a bit confused. Is it the night between 5th March and 6th March or is it between 6th March and 7th March. What is the suggested period for fasting? (I assume it is after Sunset on 5th March till Sunrise on 6th morning.) Can someone clarify ASAP? , " Ravisankar Mayavaram " <abhayambika wrote: > > This depends on location. My teacher belongs to the sringeri mutt but asked me to perform it on 6th. People may perform the vrata on whatever day their tradition or Guru decides. Guest guest
Dear satish, Just now called up Srigeri Samsthan and talked to Sri Tangirala Dakshinamurthy Garu (Brother of Acharya and Personal Secretary). He says that Acharya has declared on 5th. Entire Sringeri is celebrating on 5th. Acharyal is fasting on 5th and would be performing Chandramouliswara Puja on 5th Night. But Srisailam and Kalahasti Devasthanams are celebrating on 6th. I think to avoid this confusion and controvery, let us leave this to the convenience of the devotees. Whether 5th or 6th, ultimately our puja and devotion to Siva is most important. Let us resolve this issue here. Guest guest
Sriram is right. Just so that my earlier message doesnt create any confusion, it was later confirmed to me that it is on 5th for all sringeri following people. However in most parts of Andhra people seem to be performing this on 6th.

This way one will learn tithi nirNaya. Eventually the role of teacher may fall the current disciple and this then becomes a necessity. These decisions are made based on smrti and puraaNa-s, so it is good to find out the source (actual rules used) and understand them.
