Dear ganapathi,

The term " tara " means the deliverer or savior. It also means 'to take across'

ie., which takes us across the ocean of phenomenal existence or samsara. The

mantra of tara is referred in the 1st rik mantra of famous (vana)durga suktam of

Rig Veda.

" Jatavedase Sunavaama Somam Araateeyatu Ni Dahati Vedah.

Sanah Parushadati durgani vishwa Naveva Sindhum Duritatyagnih "

The presiding diety of this rik is Goddess Tara. " Naveva Sindhum

Duritatyagnih' denotes 'like a boat that takes us across the ocean'.

She is the most compassionate form of mother. Out of her compassion towards

her children, she is always ready to give liberation to her children.

Now, Tantric Buddhists, which is an off-shoot of shakti cult, also worship

this Tara which is the personification of Compassion. Since, the Buddha was the

most compassionate personality, tibetians correlate this Tara with Buddha, a

compassionate one.

The next rik mantra of durga suktam ie., " Taam Agni Varnaam Tapasa Jwalantim

Vairochanim Karma Phaleshu Jushtaam..... " encodes the most famous mantra of

Chinnamasta which is Vajra Vairochani.

These Tara, Chinnamasta are the Mahavidyas ie., Whose knowledge makes us cross

the ocean of samsara.

With regards,

sriram
