Guest guest
Dear sunil, I don't understand why there is confusion. If you are a resident of India, celebrate on 5th or else change it accordingly as per the calender. Jagatguru Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamigal declared for the people residing in India. And he is no ordinary person. Sringeri is the Amnaya Pita of entire southern region. For any confusion or ambiguity related to scriptures, dharma sastra, sringeri acharya is consulted. He has mastered 3 vedas, entire dharma sastra, tarka, vedanta, vyakarana and bhatta dipika. Apart from these, he is a srividyopasaka. And i think we are no great persons than him. When the jagatguru has declared the date, what is the point of confusion. With regards, sriram Forgot the famous last words? Access your message archive online. Guest guest
Thank you Mr. Sriram for the details. The confusion in my mind was due to two reasons: 1. The response (to your post) from Mr. Ravi offered an explanation on the procedure for determining the date. This procedure is of course beyond my understanding. (It didn't mention a date.) 2. All the calendars that I have show MahaShivratri as 6th March. I believe the temples here in Mumbai are also planning activities for 6th. The intention is not to offend anyone. Jai Bhole! Guest guest
shivaraatri is observed on maagha maasa kR^ishhNa paxa chaturdashi on the night when chaturdashi prevails during the nishiita kaala. That is divide the time between sun set and next day sun rise into fifteen portions, if chaturdashi is there during the 8th part (right in the middle) then it is the night you should observe. Sometimes this does not happen on any day - then a lot of special rules come into play. This probably the case with India now. In the case of Austin, TX that march 5th night is the shivaraatri, there is no doubt. Often these special rules are quite complex to understand and interpret. They are like a) If there is no chaturdashi on either night during midnight, then pick the day when chaturdashi is there during evening time around sun set (pradoshha kaala). b) If there is chaturdashi on either night, then pick the day it has connection with trayodashi (pradoshha). c) There is one page full of rules for special scenarios in vaidyanaatha dixiitiyam, they need a good knowledge of sanskrit and panchanga (such as para viddha, puurva viddha, etc.) India is a big country, if there is no nishiita kaala vyaapti on 5th night in Nagaland, that does mean there is none in Gujurat. That is why you should consult a local panchanga. May be it is on 5th in Gujurat and 6th in Nagaland. When you do not know enough to determine by yourself. You have consult your elders. If they are confused, then they have consult their aachaarya (such as kAnchi or sringeri). In this case, when sringeri aacharya says do it on 5th night, you can simply follow that.
