Guest guest
While doing Japa is it a good practice to as many number of times as possible or do it at a slow pace, enjoying each and every Bijas and letters? Like we can chant LS really for a long time enjoying, contemplating and meditating on each name. But I have also seen groups chanting LS at really fast pace. I read some where absolutely there is no use if you chant Gayathri Mantra, unless you leave enough pause at four different places. Especially when time is a constraint, do we focus more on the mantra or on the counts? Is the fruit of the Puja based on count or on quality of Japam ? This might sound little mundane for advanced Upasakas, but definitely relevant for the beginners. Regards Balaji

I guess it will be the practitioner's choice. Please see end of the post > Especially when time is a constraint, do we focus more on the >mantra > or on the counts? Counts initially. Whatever one's teacher prescribes as the minimum daily requirement. > Is the fruit of the Puja based on count or on quality of Japam ? Quality is very important I was told. When we start this new, if we are not counting, usually the mind will be elsewhere and so lacks quality. There can be no quality japam without a count. These things vary from person to person and cannot be generalised. > possible or do it at a slow pace, enjoying each and every Bijas and > letters? It is good not to hurry and do it at a slow pace. But if it is too slow to the point that there is no count, it is not japa anymore. Some of this is actually hard to put it in writing. The best way to figure what works for the individual is to experiment. Something that worked for X may not work for Y. Because of this, please take whatever is said above with a grain of salt. Ofcourse your teacher is the final authority on these issues. Rgds
Guest guest
it depends on the sankalpa. Regarding gAyatri one should be able to differentiate the five padas while chanting, even when done mentally irrespective of the speed. if there is no differentiation then the sin occurred is equal to brahmahathya regards Vishwam subrabalaji <subrabalaji Thursday, February 28, 2008 12:21:51 PM Japam Procedure While doing Japa is it a good practice to as many number of times as possible or do it at a slow pace, enjoying each and every Bijas and letters?
