Guest guest
Dear Ravi, The mantras of the Tara are given below for academic interest. However, it should be used as the Anushtana with proper initiation from a SADGURU. The 4 mantras of Tara are: 1) Pranava, Maya, Stree, Koorcha, Aastra 2) Maya Stree Koorcha, Astra 3) Maya Stree, Koorcha 4) Shuddha Pranava These 4 represent 1) Om Hrim Streem Hum Phat 2) Hrim Streem Hum Phat 3) Hrim Streem Phat 4) OM Of all the mantras of the Tara, this 4th Mantra is the Shuddopasana of Tara which is called Udgita Vidya or Akshara Vidya in Veda. This Shuddha Upasana is mentioned in Rig Veda as “Akshare Parame Vyoman” as I mentioned. Goddess Tara is the feminine form of this OM-Kara as I described in my earlier mails. This OM is the form of Vak as Avykta Agni. Veda says “Agnir Vai Vak Bhutva Mukham Pravishat” ie., This Vak becoming Agni has entered the Mouth and sits at the tip of the tongue. She is ever-flowing in the form of Vak and hence, she is Saras-vati (the one that is ever-flowing). Hence, she is Saraswathi in the form of Nila Tara that is worshipped for the poetic power, and Vak Shuddhi. This Tara when worshipped amidst the Sun (Martanda), it becomes Ugra Tara (Martanda Bhairavi). It is the Vak rupa Agni (Pranava Nada) which is called Durga because of its nature of durbhedya (Difficult to approach and understand the nature) and remover of affliction & difficulties of the upasakas (durgaartinasini). And hence, this Agni is Durga. Since, the word ‘Durga” is of feminine gender, it is conceptualized as the DEVI. Now, the Upasana of Vak is Upasana of Pranava which is the Boat to cross the ocean of Samsara. And hence, the Pranava rupa Vak rupa Agni is TARA. This is also the JATAVEDAS (that which is born of Supreme Consciousness). To know this SUPREME CONSCIOUNESS, the Upasaka has to do the Yajana (Yagya). The Mind that presides over the SOMA has to be churned to bring out the Somarasa. The Jiva Chaitanya which is the Soma Rasa has to be offered to the Agni Rupa Durga / Tara which is SUPREME CONSCIOUNESS for final merger. When Vyashti Chaitanya (Jiva) merges in the Samasti Chaitanya (Agni / Durga / Tara), the upasaka crosses the Ocean of Samsara. This Pranava rupa Tara or Durga becomes the Boat to cross the Ocean for the Upasaka. It is this Vak that shines along with Indra / Brahmanaspati as Vairochani. Vairochana is Indra or the Brahmanaspati / Agni. The power of Indra / Brahmanaspati / Agni having the supreme effulgence, luminance is VAIROCHANI. It is this VAIROCHANI that is extolled in the 2nd rik of Durga Sukta. UPASANA OF AGNI RUPA VAK IN SANDHYA ANUSHTANA The process of Sandhya Anushtana also involves the invocation of this Agni. Agni is invoked in udaka (water) and hence it becomes APSUMAAN. The Apo Devatas are the Agni present in the Udaka (Water). They are invoked as ‘APO HISTHA MAYO BHUVAH….” during the Marjana. It is this Agni devata that is invoked for the Papa-Purusha Dahana in the mantra during the Sandhya “DRUPADAT IVA MUNCHATU ……. APAH SHUDHANTI MAINASAHA’ which is a purificatory ritual. It is this Agni devata in the form of DADHIKRAV (The Agni who accepts Dadhi (curd) as the Havis - Havirgrahita as Agni who accepts the Dadhi (curd))] which is invoked as Vak to stay in the Mouth of the Sandhya Upasaka for purification of speech. It is this Agni which is invoked in the mantra “HIRANYA VARNAH SUCHAYAH PAVAKAH YASUJATAH KASYAPO……..”. It is this Agni rupa Pranava that is invoked during the Avahana “OM IT EKA AKSHARAM BRAHMA, AGNIR DEVATA….”. It is this Agni rupa Vak that is invoked as SAVITA during the chanting of Gayatri Mantra. So, consider any portion of the Veda, this pair Indra – Vajra Vairochani, Brahmanaspati – Vak, Agni – Durga are extolled. These are the Divine Pair in Veda. It is this Pair that the Tantra proclaims as SHIVA – SHAKTI, KAMESWARA – KAMESWARI, BHAIRAVA – BHAIRAVI. Now, you have asked the source of this literature. My inspiration is KAVYAKANTA VASISTA GANAPATI SASTRY as far as the DASA MAHAVIDYAS are concerned. But I have the same respect for VIDYARANYA BHASYA (Sayana is Vidyaranyana’s brother) also. Ganapati Muni’s interpretation of mantras is a synthesis of Veda, Tantra and Purana. He envisioned the same underlying principle in all these three aspects. With regards, Sriram Namah Savitre.
