Dear Shakta Bandhus,

There are 4 stages of Nada. They are Para, Pashyanti, Madhyama and Vaikhari.

The presiding deities of these 4 stages are as follows:

Para : Tripura Bhairavi

Pashyanti : Taraa

Madhyama : Mantrini (Matangi)

Vaikhari : Matangi

So, Matangi is the presiding deity of Madhyama and Vaikhari Nada. The

unmanifested Vak is Para and Manifested Vak is Vaikhari.

Matangi is the Deity of Thought. This Thought is the Source of Word or

Speech. This Thought is in form of Jnana Kala in Hridaya Guha. And hence, she

is called Jnana Sakti of Tripurasundari.

Matangi and Saraswathi though seem similar, they are a bit different.

Saraswathi is often ascribed to the Goddess of Ordinary Learning, Art and

Science. Whereas, Matangi is ascribed to Inner Knowledge – the Dahara Vidya.

Matangi is the Minister / Counselor to Rajarajeshvari or Tripura Sundari, the

Supreme Queen of the universe. And hence, she is called Mantrini. She also

presides over all the mantra svaras or the articulation of mantras.

Matangi is emerald green in color. She plays the Veena that represents the

Nada or Primordial Sound in the form of Vibration. She is said to have Parrot in

her Hands. Goddess Minakashi of Madhurai is the form of Great Matangi or Raja

Shyamala. Her upasana bestows the knowledge of Carnatic Music to her votaries.

The Ucchista Chandali Mantra pertains to Mantangi. But the Suddhopasana is

the Pranava (OM) just like Tara Mantra. The Shuddopasana of Matangi involves

meditation of the Pravana at Svadhishtana, Anahata Chakras and at the tip of

the tongue as she presides over Madhyama and Vaikhari Vak.

This is the Jnana Sakthi of Tripurasundari. Though Matangi and Raja Shyamala

are having same functionalities, in the context of dasa mahavidyas, Matangi is

an Independent Deity and in the context of Sri Vidya, she is the Jnana Kala of

Sri Lalitha.

The Varahi or Dandanatha / Dandini is the Kriya Sakti of Tripurasundari. She

is also called Varthaali or Ekavira. Since she is the Kriya Sakti which is

otherwise called “Vira Nari” (a Brave Women in the battle field) during the

fierce battle of Tripurasundari and Bhandasura. The word “Vaarthaali” is

etymologically derived from Tamil word “Orutthu Ali”. She holds the weapon in

the form of Danda / Rod which symbolizes her Viraatva in the battle. The word

“Kirichakra Rathaarudha” encodes the Kriya Sakti of the Devatha.

One of the most popular kshetra of Varahi is the Varaha-Narasimha Kshetra of

Simhachalam, near Visakhapatnam at Andhra Pradesh. The people believe this idol

to be Varaha Narasimha. But, this Simhachalam was used to be a great place of

Sakti Worship in the form of Varahi. There are several salagramas with Varahi

Yantra inscribed at the premises of worship.

With regards,

sriram

Namah Savitre.
