The book you have mentioned " In Praise of the Goddess: The

Devimahatmya and Its Meaning " by Devadatta Kali is an academic

research work. Though the book is excellent, it is not meant as a

manual for recitation purposes. So the procedure for recitation is

not given. There are some more good books on Devi Mahatmya by Coburn.

But none of these are the manuals for ritual. Plese remember that

academic dissertations are not meant to be ritual manuals.

Swamiji's book is the only book which gives complete instructions. It

is basically the same as the tradition given in Durga

Saptasathi(another name for Devi Mahatmyam) by Gita Press, Gorakpur,

Uttar Pradesh edition which is the most widely accepted tradition in

India. They have no English edition. Even their Hindi edition is not

as comprehensive as Swamiji's.

Dear Devotees of Amba,

First of all, I wish everyone a very Happy Navratri! May the Divine Grace of

Jagadamba be upon us all.

Now, I have a question that has been in my mind for some time and am hoping

that someone can help me with. I regularly attend a Devi temple where every

Navratri there is a most magnificient Chandi Yagna and divine chantings. I have

noticed many times over the years that during these prayers, some women begin to

shake vigorously or let there hair loose and swing their head or stomp their

feet, or do such things. I am curious to know what is happening here and why

this happens. I noticed that this only happens during Devi prayers. Does

anyone know what I am talking about?

Jai Mata Di,

Raj

Such happennings are sentimental and emotional in nature and they have no

relationship to reality.
