Dear Gopal,

As far functional aspects are concerned, there is no difference between the

Prachodayaat and Chodayitri. The first one is addresses the SAVITR and the

second one addresses the VAK.

Vak is also called Saraswathi because it is “ever flowing” – “saras-vati”. It

is this Goddess of Speech (Vak) that is addressed in Saraswathi Suktam. This

Vak in the form of Manifested Speech is the EFFECT and the Brahmanaspati /

Brihaspati / Agni is the CAUSE. VAK is also called NADA. It is this Vak that

is ever-flowing in the Universe and in the Individual. This Vak takes the form

of Speech and Praana (Vital Force) and flows as life current. This dual form

ie., as Vital Force and as Speech in the form of Para, Pashyanti, Madhyama and

Vaikhari is EVER-FLOWING both in Brahmanda and in Pindanda. Hence, she is

SARAS-WATI. The words “Ashtaapati” and “Chatuspati” indicates the different

planes of Consciousness that resides in the Supreme Heaven “Parame Vyoman”.

This “Akshare Parame Vyoman” is the Supreme Ether / Consciousness which is the

Pranava.

Now, in Gayatri Mantra, there is no particular devata that is being addressed.

It is addressed to the SAVITR which is the Indweller as Supreme Light in the

Sun. The mantra in the Sandhya Anushtana “ASAVADITYO BRAHMA” is the Kilaka or

the Crux of the Anushtana. This Supreme Light is the Antaryami of the

Individual that Inspires his Intellect. This SAVITR is the Activator of all

the beings on the earth – Animate and Inanimate. It inspires with its 3 forces

Samvit, Kriya and Iccha. These are the aspects of Knowledge. With these 3

forces, SAVITR activates the beings. “Prasavitah sarveshaam bhutanaam

praaninaam cha prasava – chetana preranaadi hetubhuta paramaatman.” Says the

Sruti. It is responsible for birth and inspiration of all living beings and so

he is SAVITR and hence called Paramaatma. SAVITR is the form of TRUTH and

Inspirer of TRUTH. The functional aspect of this Inspiration is

“Prachodayaat”.

Whereas, Saraswathi is the goddess of Speech (Vak) that is in metrical form.

The 3 meters are 1) Gayatri 2) Trishtup 3) Jagati. These 3 meters are the

tri-sandhyas. This Speech or Vak is the Manifested Sound (Vyakta Vak).

Brahmanaspati / Vakpati / Brihaspati is the Unmanifested Sound (Avyakta Vak).

It is through Unmanifested Speech / Avyakta Vak that the Manifested Speech (Vak)

is evolved. This Manifested Vak is the ENTIRE CREATION which is called NADA.

During this process of evolution, Saraswathi IS INSPIRED by the BRAHMANASPATI

and gives the BLUE PRINT of the Creation.

Commentary runs as “tvam brahmachodini brahmanah prerayitri paraa chitih

chitshakti rupa, tasmaat saa tena brahmanaa brahmaatmanaiva prachodita prerita

sati saamna rasena tat saamarasyena tat brahma prati chodayasi prat prerayasi,

ata eva tvam “brahmachodini” iti”

Oh Saraswathi! You inspire in us the TRUTH about the BRAHMA. And you are

inspired by Him. Being equal in essence and being equated with Him, you inspire

Him. Hence, you are called Brahmachodani.

Saraswathi Suktam says that she is Chodayatri Sunrtanam ie., Impeller of

TRUTH, Chetanani Sumatinam ie., Awakens right thinking; prachetayati ketuna ie.,

makes us conscious by constant awakening and impulsion.

With regards,

Sriram

Namah Savitre
