Dear members,

The meaning of the word “Venkatanatha†is explained in several ways. For

example “vem†means the sin, ‘kata’ means to destroy, ‘natha’ means

the lord. So, Venkatanatha means the ‘Lord who destroys the Sins’. So be

it.

But in the words of my gurunatha and Shri SK Ramachander Rao, (both were close

friends) probably this etymological origin makes sense to me and this meaning

also suits his nature and his Lila.

“Venkatanatha†is derived from the word “DVI+EKA+NAATAâ€.

“Dvi†means ‘Twoâ€; “Eka†means “One†and “Naata†means

Natana / Drama / Lila.

Lord Venkateswara grants the devotees wish and in turn recovers the dues in

the form of Money alongwith Principal Interest. This is the case for every wish

the devotee asks for which is a Lila for Him. Here, ‘Eka’ is Wish and

‘Dvi’ is the ‘Original Loan along with the Principal Interestâ€. One

can recall the popular adage in telugu for this meaning ie., ‘VADDI KAASULA

VADU’.

And this entire thing of recovering the LOAN ALONGWITH THE INTEREST IS A

DIVINE LILA OR SPORT of Lord Venkateswara. The evolution of the word is like

this:

DVI+EKA+NAATA >>VE+KA+NAATA>>VEM+KATA+NATHA>>VENKATANATHA

The posture of the lord is also similar to this. One hand is on his waist and

the other is in varada mudra with couple of his fingers a bit separated and

pointing towards his devotees as if he is sarcastically displaying the number

‘Two’ to his devotees and reminding them the “LOAN ALONGWITH PRINCIPAL

INTERESTâ€. And this “LOAN ALONG WITH INTEREST†he has to repay to Lord

Kubera as a vow during His marriage with Goddess Padmavathi. And this entire

event is a Lila of the Lord.

To me this second meaning seems sense.

With regards,

Sriram
