I came across this statement in the Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasting " In Sri VIdya, One is Forbidden to Fast Him/Her self because the Devi is within them, and starving would in return starve the god. It is mandatory that upasakas should worship divine mother with a smiling face, with perfumes and scents and without the mouth stinking -suralibha vadanaha. BUT MOST OF THE SRIVDYOPASAKAS TAKE THESE PRIVILEGES FOR GRANTED. Some of the upasakas whom I have personally contacted observe these things: 1) Do not observe the Ekadasi vrata as ordained by Dharma Sindhu 2) Do not care to do " Namaste " with folded hands while greeting others 3) Do not perform Nitya Karmas like Vaidika Sandhyavandana with Gayatri Mantra, Brahma Yajna etc. as they are under the impression that " No anushtana is required when Shodasi is done " and no Vaidika Sandhya is required as they have tantrika Sandhyavandana 4) Some of the upasakas have gone to extent of removing their Upavitha (I have personally seen them and they are grihasthas) Now, regarding the points 1) and 2), a upasaka who has undergone MAHASHODA NYASA with PURNABHISHEKA need not bother about fasts and other religious observances and SHOULD NOT PROSTRATE before others. Now, this form of Diksha alongwith Mahashoda Nyasa, now-a-days, is given just like that without proper adhikara (both guru and sishya). The moment they take the diksha, they pose as if they are on par with great Shaktha Bhasurandanatha or the Jagatguru Sankara Bhagavatpada. Under this impression, they do not observe the 1st and 2nd points. Instead they give the example of the incident of Shri Bhaskararaya and a Sanyasi where the Sanyasi insists Bhaskara to prostrate before him. When Bhaskara prostrates before Sanyasi, the Danda (Staff) and Kamandala of the Sanyasi is shattered to pieces. If the Diksha is properly taken by a disciple (who has the adhikara) from a Guru of Sat-sampradaya, the moment Mahavedha and Mahashoda Nyasa is performed, the shat-chakra bhedana is achieved and the disciple enjoys the kulamrita rasa at Sahasrara. IT IS ONLY TO SUCH DISCIPLES, THESE PRIVILEGES ARE GIVEN. ONLY SUCH UPASAKAS WHO HAVE ACHIEVED TEMENDOUS ENERGIES THROUGH KUNDALINI PRABODHANA AND SHAT-CHAKRA BHEDANA ARE IDENTIFIED WITH THE FORM OF TRIPURASUNDARI. BECAUSE, FOR THEM NOTHING REMAINS TO BE ACHIEVED (FASTS, VIGILS ETC. ARE JUST A MEANS). REST OF THE UPASAKAS (WHO HAVE NOT ACHIEVED THE CHAKRA BHEDANA, KULAMRITA ), EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE SRIVIDYA-INITIATES, HAVE TO OBSERVE EKADASI VRATA, HAVE TO PERFORM NITYA KARMAS, SHOULD NEVER REMOVE THEIR UPAVITHA, SHOULD BE HUMBLE ENOUGH TO PROSTRATE BEFORE " VIPRAS " , " NITYA AGNIHOTRIS " AND PUNDITAS. EVERY HINDU (IRRESPECTIVE OF WHATEVER UPASANA ONE HAS) HAS TO OBSERVE 24 EKADASI VRATAS IN ONE'S LIFE TIME. JYESHTA SHUDDHA EKASAI IS THE NIRJALA EKASADI WHERE EVEN WATER SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHED. Unfortunately, the ekadasi vrata is relegated to secondary position now-a-days. Even if fasting is done, it is supplemented with a dozen idlis and half a dozen cups of coffee. My gurunatha used to observe mouna vrata and fast during the ekadasi. Brahmasri tadepalli ragahava narayana sastrigal used to observe fast during ekadasi, pournami, navaratri and perform kalpoktha navavarana archana to srichakra. Vashishta ganapati muni, from the day he attained kapala bhedana siddhi, used to have light meal of dal, rasam and butter milk and during the nights a glass of lukewarm milk. This he maintained through his life. During the period of performing tapas, he used to observe fast. Kanchi mahaperiyaval right from his age of 40 years till his siddhi, used to have only puffed rice soaked in buttermilk during the morning and tulasi tirtha during nights. Any person who wants to initiate another person should possess the total divine energy of that mantra and also know the technique to transmit that divine energy to the proposed disciple. Otherwise it is useless. 2. i am amazed and pained to find that people charge hefty sums to initiate. 3. Even people having bala imagine that they are Goddess herself without understanding the fact that none can merge with God until the maha pralaya. 4. I find total absence of humility and there is abundane of arrogance and self deceit in many upasakas. Recently i witnessed a prathyinkira homam done in a famous temple and when i went the near them, they told me to get away. They totally have no sense of honour and think that they are the only veterans in the world. 5. When an upasaka is perfect he does not see any difference and everything is viewed as thojamayam, brahmamayam, vidhyamayam etc. How then he can claim he is great. 6. i do not think anybody could be burned to ashes, irrespective of whether the Upasaka is great. When one reaches the relm of reality, he is merged with everything including animate and inanimate, and how then he can burn others. Personally i do not believe the story of Bhaskararaya, as he would not have certainly done that or disrespect. 7. I am also of the firm opinion that there seems to be none who had mastered the so called kundalini sakthi. if what we assume the vital energy as kundalini energy, every adolascent entering brahmacharya should have been great saints. Kundalini refers to the athma and not human energy. 8. I know great saints observe fast in order to cleanse their system and mind and it is absolutely essential that the ekadasi vratham is one of the chosen. 9. Now a days poorna diksha is given without going through the formalities, and I ahve not seen any guru mandalam bestowing on the sishya " sarva mantra adhikaro bhaveth " and the necessary peetathikaram. 10. it is also said to see several upasakas falling a prey to women who get attracted towards them, because such upasakas promise that and this to the women. They are more on kaulachara to have intercourse and not interaction for integration through athma sakshatkara. The union of the life principle with that of the guru is alone called as union of souls and not otherwise. I am writing these not with a view to hurt anyone, but my own views which may or may not have any basis. I am in the field of upasaka more than 50 years and personal experience of mine is more important to me than anythingelse.
