Parvathi took the form of Peacock and married shiva at this sthalam

hence the name Mayiladuthurai .-Mayil (peacock). The temple's Gopuram

is 164 feet high and temple is situated at 4,78,913 sq.feet serene

location. Mayiladuthurai is famous for Thula Snanam (bathing center)

where it is considered sacred to take bath at kaviri river during

Diwali. This temple was reconstructed with stone, during the period of

Sembiyan Mahadevi (10th century); however renovations from the 19th

century have destroyed the older structures and the inscriptions.
