Dear members,

This is the Bala Tripurasundari Suprabhatam which was composed by Maharishi

Srividya Vachaspati Brahmasri Tadepalli Raghavanarayana Sastry of Chandavolu,

Guntur District, AP.

A short profile of Brahmasri Tadepalli Raghavanarayana Sastry

Shri Sastry was a marvelous srividyopasaka, and verily was the form of

Kamakshi Parabhattarika. During the sastra sabha in Andhra Desa that was

presided by Kanchi Mahaperiyaval, the swamigal commented on sastry as follows.

“There is ONLY ONE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ME AND RAGHAVANARAYANA SASTRY. AND THAT

IS SASTRY IS GRIHASTA (MARRIED) AND I AM A SANYASI. THIS THE ONLY DIFFERENCE

BETWEEN ME AND SASTRYâ€.

The spiritual heights which Mahaperiyaval attained, was also attained by Shri

Sastry of Chandavolu. A karmishti to the core, performed the Sandhya, Brahma

Yajna, Vaisvadeva, Guru Tarpana, Veda Adhyayana, Navavarana Archana to the core

everyday. He was an ahitAgni till his life time. He was born on 25-8-1896 at

Guntur. Regarding the birth, there was a revelation to his father Shri

Venkatappayya Sastry. His father had a vision that his son was a mahayogi in

Manidwipa and due to the command of Mother Lalitha would be born in his house as

his son.

He was initiated into Bala Mantra at the tender age of 9 years. Attained the

Bala Mantra Siddhi at the age of 16. His mantra guru was Tadikonda

Kedaralingayya. At the childhood itself completed the tarka, vyakarana,

mimamsa, kavya, nataka, alankara. Was initiated into the secrets of Chintamani,

Panchakshari, Ganapati, Chandi, Panchadasi, Shodasi by Brahmasri Addepalli

Somanatha Sastry of Kallepalli.

Every night shri sastry used to perform Mahasodanyasa, Pranayama, Kumbhaka and

used to be in Antarmukha Avastha till 2 midnight. For 2 hours, he used to sleep.

Used to get up at 4 AM for nityakarmanushtana.

Shri Sastry used to perform 9 hours long sriyantra puja during every navaratri

and used to give discourses on Saubhagya Bhaskara in the evenings. During one

navaratri, Sastry after giving discourse in the evening retired to bed at 1:00

clock night. The doors of the house were open and the golden and silver

utensils and kamandala used for worship were in the verandah. The thieves

taking this advantage wanted to barge inside the house. When they were about to

enter the house, they heard a loud laughter of a Deity. When they lit the

lantern, saw, to their ashtonishment, Mother Kali was guarding the Golden

Sriyantra of the Sastry. Seeing the Mother Kali, immediately the thieves fled

that area. Meantime, sastry woke up and saw the scene of Mother Kali which

sword and knife guarding the sriyantra. Immediately, the following couplet

sprang from his mouth.

“gurukritanavarAtrOtsava sandarshakabhaktarakShiNi yatra

kAlI karavAlakarA yAmika mUrtih mallimluchAn jigyEâ€

Several are the wonderful lilas of sastry. His father was a wonderful

sivopasaka and rama bhakta. Shri Venkatappayya Sastry (sastry’s father) used

to suffer from Udara Shula Vyadhi (a sort of appendicitis). He could cure his

pain with mantra sastra but did not. He used to repeat the Brihadaranya

Upanishad sloka “EtadEva paramam tapO yat vyAhita stapyatEâ€. Suffering the

disease and performing the anushtana itself is a GREAT TAPAS.

Once his disciple pleaded his father saying ask the Siva to cure the illness

of Shula Vyadhi. Immediately, Venkatappayya Sastry’s reply came in the form

of a couplet.

ambEti shUlaparipIDita kukShidEshah

Artah smarannapi parAm janakashcha tasya

shrutvAmbikA vachana mIpsitadAna siddham

shUlitvamEva vararAjatayA sa vavrE

This is a wonderful poetic composition inspite of his excruciating pain. When

disciple asked him to cure his shula vyadhi, his answer was negative and

poetically he expressed that “HE WANTED TO REMAIN AS SHULIâ€. This has 2

meanings. One is that he wants to experience his prarabdha karma and the other

is he wanted TO BE SHULI OR THE FORM OF SHIVA (WHO HOLDS THE SHULA / TRIDENT AND

HENCE SHULI).

Shri Sastry’s wife Smt. Sridevamma was the Mother Annapurna in human form.

Whatever may be the time of the visiting hours of the guests, disciples,

students, without any inconvenience and embarrassment, used to feed them with

sumptuous food. Even, if one visits the sastry in midnight, she used to cook

the food. Infact, both Raghavanarayana Sastry and Sridevamma were like

adi-dampatis.

THE ONLY LEGACY AND PROPERTY SHRI SASTRY HAD WAS HIS FINGER RING MADE OF

DARBHA GRASS, RS. 14/- AS BANK BALANCE, A SRIYANTRA, SOME SILVER UTENSILS FOR

PUJA, ANA A VEDA PATHASALA.

On the fateful day of 10-12-1990 (Monday), shri sastry left for Manidwipa.

When the fueral pyre was lit, a beautiful form of Bala Tripurasundari came out

of the pyre and vanished into the thin air. This marvelous incident was

published in local telugu news paper “Andhra Jyotiâ€.

The next day, shri sastry’s daughter had a vision. In the vision, she saw

Bhagavan Vyasa, Sage Suka Brahman and his father Shri Sastry were in the abode

of Manidwipa in the blissful state of Samadhi.

Shri Narayana Sastry and my gurunatha were saha-adhyayis during the vyakarana

adhyayana. Both were close friends and were like Rama and Sugriva in

friendship.

Dear Sriram,

After reading this I could shed tears only, because great souls are always great

and how can we pay our respects to them excepting shedding tears of bliss and

joy. You are blessed doubly and I am so happy to see that you have the " care and

share " attitude, which is missing with several srividhyo upasakas. I wish you

all the best.

Incidentally, i sent you the details about the proposed " Mantra-Tantra-Yantra "

conference in Hyderabad in January 2009. Iam sure you would kindly take the

trouble of sending some good articles and papers for presentation and

publication in the souvenir. i am sure you would attend the conference and i

shall send you the invitation when it is ready.

Could you also publish this request in the group study. Kindly send your biodata

so that it can be included.

Whomsoever want to attend the conference they are welcome, but excepting for the

delegates, others will have to make their own arragements for their stay and

transport. Food will of course be provided.

If anyone of our divine upasakas want to submit any paper or article for the

souvenir, they are welcome.

Regards,

S.SHANGARANARAYANAN

Dear sir,

Namaste. Yes you are right. The sastras and srividya is still

vibrant because of the presence of such wonderful gurus. Mine is just

a childish blabber. But i believe in sharing of thoughts and ideas.

Because if a brahmin does not share his knowledge, shastra says that

he would be born as brahmarakshasa.

BTW, i have seen the tentative schedule.

Dear Narayanji, what can i contribute when the great stallwart Shri

Goda Venkateshwara Sastrigal is giving key note address apart from

other stalwarts of srividya upasana. I would prefer to be a silent

spectator.

with regards,

sriram
