Dear members,

“Damanaka†is a creeper that originated from the tears of the two wives

Rati and Preeti of Kama Deva. The Lord Manmatha was reduced to ashes for

disturbing the penance of Lord Siva, both the wives wept. And from the tears of

these two wives, has originated the Damanaka creeper.

A srividyopasaka should worship this Damanaka creeper every year on Chaitra

Sukla Chaturdasi. There is a tantric worship to Lord Manmatha along with his

two wives Rati and Preeti using this Damanaka creeper. After performing the

Damana puja alongwith Manmatha, Rati and Preeti, using the same Damanaka creeper

the upasaka should worship Mahatripurasundari and should perform Kumari puja,

suvasini puja. Kumaris should be sumptuously fed and new clothes should be

presented.

On Chaitra Sukla Chaturdasi, using the astra mantra, the creeper along with

the roots should be taken; with Hridaya mantra, sandal paste, kumkuma etc.

should be applied to the creeper; worship should be performed to Bhagavati Nitya

on Chaturdasi; drawing a navakona yantra, kalasha should be placed on it; a

trikona should be drawn and Lord Manmatha should be invoked in the Trikona

Mandala alongwith his two wives Rati and Preeti. Vasantha Puja should be

performed in the Mandala alongwith Kadamba and Ashosha tree. After performing

the worship to the Damanaka creeper, the Mahatripurasundari should be worshipped

with this Damanaka creeper.

The Damanaka Puja thus performed confers the Srividya Upasana Siddhi to the

Year-long Upasana.

This is a sweet-scented creeper which is found in nallamali forest of

srisailam. I donot know about other parts of India. Also used in

ayurvedic medicine. Also used for vashikarana prayogas.

Dear Dasgupta,

Local name for Damanaka creeper : Tetaypati (in Assami language)

Ayurvedic name is Damanaka however the Assamis call it by

name " Tetaypati " .

From your surname, I presume you are Bengali. So, this local name

might be quite popular in your region. But I could not find the

Siddha Name.

This plant is found in slopes and ridges at shady and moist places.

Apart from the medicinal purpose the plant also has many uses in

traditional and religious functions. This plant is used in Ayurveda

in skin diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, bleeding and various

toxic conditions and to maintain the body humors. (Source: Medicinal

herbs and its uses from Agricultural University)

Infact, during the sukla paksha of Chaitra, the presiding deities

from Prathipat till Pournami are worshipped with Damanaka creeper.

The Devi Gita also mentions about this utsava called " Damanaka

Utsava " which is celebrated during the Chaitra Month for Goddess

Durga. But this is quite a special ceremony for tantrikas of srividya

lineage.

In Bengal during Durga puja on dashera day, there is a ritual of worshiping

Devi with Aparajita creeper. I do not know if it is the same plant. Does

this plant bear blue flower of heart shape?

Aparajita is a valid substitute of Damanaka Utsava whose scientific

name is clitoria ternatea. Even Rabindranatha Tagore sings about this

creeper in his famous work " Gitanjali " . Shri Ramakrishna used to

worship Durga with this creeper.

I doubt if damanaka and aparajita are same because both are sanskrit

names. But still i will find out and get back to you.

Dear dasguptaji,

Aparajita and Damanaka are different. Aparajita is also called

Vishnukranta in sanskrit. Yes i have seen the blue flowers in the

shape of heart.

Damanaka is entirely different.

Thanks a lot sir. Devi gita says this to be a sort of " kunda "

creeper (a sort of jasmine which the Kamadeva is very fond of). But

this creeper is found in high altitudes of above 2000 mts on the

hilly areas. I heard that is found in Srisailam forests and the

local tribals worship the Siva with this creeper. This is also used

for medicines in snake bites by local tribals.
