Guest guest
Dear members, What exactly is the basis of division of 12 jyotirlingas and in what way they had become jyotirlingas, if anybody can explain to me, i am interested to know. But, after going through some of the manuscripts on Siva Panchastavi, especially, the " HalAyudha stotram " , there seems to be some contradiction with the popular belief about the number " 12 " related to jyotirlingas. The author of HalAyudha Stotra happens to be from Karnataka kshetra in general and Hossur, in particular. The stotra is engraved on the temple walls of the Omkareshwara Jyotirlinga Kshetra which is supposed to be engraved or written in 10th century. Basically, this hymn is dedicated to the Great Jyotirlinga Omkareshwara. In this hymn, the author endorses only three (3) Jyotirlingas ie., Vishwanath of Kasi, Mallikarjuna of Srisailam and Omkareshwara of Amareshwara. The 39, 40 slokas extol the greatness of the Jyotirlinga in these kshetras and what exactly is meant by " Jyoti " is clearly mentioned. Also the subsequent slokas mention about the " Dahara Vidya " and " Akshi Purusha Vidya " which is the Upasana of the Jyoti in Dahara Akasa and in the right eye. It is also interesting to note that one of the temple walls in Mahakala Temple of Ujjain engraves the list of 90 Jyotirlingas across India. So, this classification of 12 jyotirlingas also need to be studied seriously to bring the true facts into limelight. with regards, sriram

Guest guest
I have already cleared my stand on the opionion of siva purana & the concept of jyotirlingas. For further reference, " purANa mimAmsa " by Shri Sacchidananda TIrtha is suggested. with regards, sriram , vishwanthan Krishnamoorthy <krishvishy wrote: > > > there is a chapter on the Jyotirlingas in the utara khanda of the Siva purana, I do not have the copy with me right now, I will look into it and reply > > regards > Vishwam > > > > > ________________________________ > sriram <sriram_sapthasathi > > Friday, February 27, 2009 9:43:26 AM > 12 jyotirlngas - Is it a true fact? > > > Dear members, > > What exactly is the basis of division of 12 jyotirlingas and in what > way they had become jyotirlingas, > if anybody can explain to me, i am interested to know. > > But, after going through some of the manuscripts on Siva > Panchastavi, especially, the " HalAyudha stotram " , > there seems to be some contradiction with the popular belief about > the number " 12 " related to jyotirlingas. > > The author of HalAyudha Stotra happens to be from Karnataka kshetra > in general and Hossur, in particular.
