Just as there is a controvery in the count of jyotirlingas, there is

also a

controversy in the count of 18 puranas moreover the existence of

original

siva purana (siva dharmottara purana???).

As per the pundita-vakya also by Shri Sacchidananda Tirtha (author

of Purana Mimamsa),

the purana works of Bhagavan Badarayana are 3 in number. They are

Devi Bhagavata, Markandeya Purana

and Bhagavata Purana. Rest of the puranas fall into the category

of " confusion of authorship " though

Agni Purana (from its style of composition) seems to be quite

ancient.

Though satarudra samhita, suta samhita describes about the rudra

tattva, jyotirlingas, where exactly and what

exactly are the jyotirlingas is a questionmark to most of the

scholars. The opionion of the scholars is that

even the 12 jyotirlingas in Siva Purana is a " controversy " which has

been incorporated in later stages of

evolution.

The halAyudhA kavi, also a great agama pundita, a great aghora

sivopasaka, endorses Omkareshwara, Viswanath,

Mallikarjuna to be the " uncorrupted concept " of jyotirlingas as when

the upasaka contemplates here, the Siva

gives the vision in the form of Huge Mass of Fire from Earth to

Heaven. Also mentions 3 different colours at

3 different kshetras.

The temple of Mahakal at Ujjain has engravings and paintings of the

list of 90 jyotirlingas.

There is a controversy on Bhimasankara, Vaidyanatha, Linga at

Darukavana.

If we go by the concept of Jyotirlinga, then " Arunachala Hill "

should also be added as Jyotirlinga but it is

called as Agni Linga.

There is no " concrete " evidence as to what are the exact 12

jyotirlingas even now.

Nevertheless, it is a debatable issue but whether Satarudra

Samhita / Siva Purana etc..... can be held as pramana

is something which is a food for thought.

I don't have the brochure list right now.

But the temple authorities of Ujjain have the entire list of 90 places. Also,

they have got the India Map and 90 jyotirlingas painted (alongwith map pointing)

next to temple premises. Even though it is not pramanika but it is based on the

belief of local

temple authorities.

Another interesting this is that on the top of the ceiling of Mahakala Temple,

there are wonderful paintings of 64 yoginis alongwith the names. Local people

call them as " Chausat Yogini " .

These 64 yogini temple is also found in Orissa but some of the are

in dilapidated condition.
