Guest guest
Devi Bhaktas, My father initiated me into the holy Gayatri mantra with the 3 Vyahrithis, ie starting with OM BHURBHUVASSUVAH. However in his book " RAJA YOGA " Swami Vivekananda advises chanters to prefix with OM and end with OM too, ie without the 3 Vyahruthis. I would like to know, what is the difference between these two modes of chanting? Regards, Hari
Guest guest
For the people like us, amnaya pita of sringeri, our father and his family lineage (who blessed us with holy gayatri mantra), dharma sastras are the refuge for any sastra sandeha. Manu smriti clearly states that gayatri mantra without vyahrti should not be chanted. So, there should not be any ambiguity in chanting gayatri with vyahriti traya which is a sat-sampradaya. For further reference pl. refer manu smriti. regs, sriram , " Krishnan, Harihara " <harihara.krishnan wrote: > > Devi Bhaktas, > > My father initiated me into the holy Gayatri mantra with the 3 > Vyahrithis, ie starting with OM BHURBHUVASSUVAH. > > However in his book " RAJA YOGA " Swami Vivekananda advises chanters to > prefix with OM and end with OM too, ie without the 3 Vyahruthis. > > I would like to know, what is the difference between these two modes of > chanting? > > Regards, > Hari > > >
Guest guest
Dear Sri Krishnan, Your reference to Swami Vivekananda's Raja yoga: In that particular instance, he states the English translation of Gayatri and asks his readers (i could imagine him thinking of his western and anglicized readers) to add Om to it. He does not say chant gayathri in sanskrit as seen in Rg Veda with just Om. That too, in this instance, he (seems to me at least) encourages the readers to use gayathri's translated text to time their Pranayama. For some one initiated in a traditional way, this suggestion could not convey the whole truth. Coming from Swami Vivekananda, there are a lot of instances in his works meant for non-traditional and non-Indian audience which may appear to be contradictory to many prescribed day-today practices. I do not want to go into the details of such anectodal clips so as not to open my first mentor as a subject of discussion in this forum. IK Taimini has a lucid book called 'Gayathri'. For epistemological explanations you can refer to some PDFs available from vedah.com where the Gods of Rig Veda are explained in the light of Sri Aurobindo and Sri Kapali Sastri. Surya Gayathri is included in them. Many devata gayathris come without vyahritis if not all of them. Surya-Savitr or brahma gayathri alone has three vyahritis in that order. Sri Aurobindo enunciated a form of Gayathri in which the seeker prays for the Light of Truth to transform. This does not contain vyahritis either but is self-evident why. In his gayathri, Sri Aurobindo emcompasses all the seven planes from physical to Truth represented by (bhu, bhuva, svaha, maha, jana, tapa, sathya) to be reached down by the Light while brahma gayathri is meant to span the first three with Mahar loka or plane represented by Surya-Savitr or as Rig Veda loves to state,Golden Lid. Among the audience of celestial singers, I don't want to be a cricket doing alaapana. so I stop here... -gopal For the people like us, amnaya pita of sringeri, our father and his family lineage (who blessed us with holy gayatri mantra), dharma sastras are the refuge for any sastra sandeha.
