Guest guest
Namaskaram All I do not want to hurt any individuals feelings or beliefs. But after gooing through the posts I want to place some intersting materials I have gathered during my studies and pilgrimages. 1,A French christian missionary who spent most of his time in South India in the then princely kingdoms of Mysore and Tanjore has written that during his stay in Conjeevaram the consecration of the temple of the Goddess took place and that the Chief Teacher/Priest of the Gentiles(Hindus) came down from the Concun and that he was recieved by the raja of Mysore and given a full escort. This fact is coroborated by the narrative of an English mercenary who took up the profession of a Doctor and Chief Gunner under the Nabob of Karnatic. He also more or less repeats the same thigs but there is a variation of the year in the narratives. But it was in the late 18th Century 2.If the Kanchi tradition is accepted in toto it would place Adi Sankara some time BCE even before Budhha. However It is accepted by all traditions that Sankarabhagavath Padal had dicussions combats with leaders of Jain/Budhist sects whose age is confirmed by the respective Jain/Budhist texts. These place Adi Sankara in the 7th/8th CE AD.A tradition accepted by all the Peethams except Kanchi. 3. The local traditions of Badrinath and Srisailam mention that the place was won by Adi Sankara from the Jains. 4 As per the local tradition in Kedarnath Adi Sankara attained Gaana Samadi there. There is a small temple for him there and now they have constructed a big dandam s a show piece 5. The revenue records of the old Madras Presidency do not mention anthing about a math holding properties in Kanchi till the 1920s It is for the individuals to come to their own conclusions. Guest guest
Sankara mostly debated with adherents of puurva miimaamsa. By the time of this avatara - kumarila in north and Saivite nAyanmars in south had cleared out the dominance of naastika darshana-s such as jaina and bouddha. kanchi/sringeri is a controversial topic and once in a while advaita-l goes on flame about this one. I am convinced that we will find no resolution. It is best not to get agitated by this topic. It even better if members can steer past this discussion and focus on devotional works on shiva dampati. With best wishes, Ravi , " pibikay " <pibikay wrote: > > Namaskaram All > I do not want to hurt any individuals feelings or beliefs. But it was in the late 18th Century > 2.If the Kanchi tradition is accepted in toto it would place Adi Sankara some time BCE even before Budhha.
