Dear learned members,

Is there a mention of Shri Santoshi Mata and her puja kalpa in any of the

classical texts?. I recently learnt that the devi is the daughter of Lord

Ganapathy and that her worship became prevalant only after the release of the

Hindi movie " Jai Santoshi Maa " in 1975. Is " Santhoshi Matha " , only a fictious

deity or a tantric deity?

Dear srinath,

There is no basis for Santoshimata / Vaibhava Lakshmi / Ashta Lakshmi in

classical texts. It is a recent trend introduced.

Also, the vratas of these deities were of recent origin. Santoshimata vrata &

Vaibhava Lakshmi vrata is becoming popular among andhraites also as these get

spread in kitchen from household ladies chit-chat.

Hi,

can we ever have a fictitious deity? really, with so many variations, I believe

that every deity gets absorbed in the hindu pantheon.

Most temple sthala puranas are in the same vein as the story behind the Vaibhava

Lakshmi Vratam,

what I gather about these vratas are that they are some variation of the

16upachara puja, and if we assume that the principle God head is one then it all

gets to Her :)

what I would like to know is where is the basis for all the naivedhyams

regards

Vishwam

Dear vishwam,

Necessity is the mother of invention.

As the greed in human being increases, he invents *new gods* & *goddesses*.

My grandfather never heard of santoshi mata / vaibhav lakshmi vratam etc. But

now we hear a lot of them. Now my grandchildren would hear the puja kalpa of

Mata Vijayeshwari Ashtottara / Sahasranama / Kalpa which eventually become *new

gods*. Similarly X babas.

It is high time we should introspect ourselves what is the purpose of invention

of new gods / goddess.

OK, for financial gains - Vaibhav Lakshmi is granted. But is not Kanakadhara

Stotram enough which is a very potent sloka. Is not Satyanarayana Vratam enough

which is a very potent vrata / puja which can be performed by all the castes.

Infact, Satyanarayana Vratam (my personal experience as well as my gurunatha's)

when performed on every pournami for 25 pournamis, can grant wonderful results.

On the 25th pournami, a small udyapana is performed and annadana is done. Just

see the result which is miraculous!!

These *new gods* exploit our weaknesses especially gullible household ladies.

I cannot remember this devata(santoshi)appearing anywhere in standard texts. Not

even any mention as a parivara (i.e. attendant deity) devata of any major

devata. I am willing to change my opinion if any standard text mentions it.

But if you popularise it, it will probably become famous like shirdi sai baba or

some other baba and you will see temples and stories like him being avatara of

dattatreya and what not...But hey if this baba is dattAvatAra why not worship

datta himself??
