Here is something we should know: If one learns a mantra for example, no amount of bhakti(see more below) with all its emotional display is going to give you mantra siddhi. I can vouch for this and will bet on the same. Only a strong and dedicated discipline coupled with yoga sAdhana and a deep study of the related shastra-s might bring about the mantra chaitanya - not otherwise. There is a subtlety here. That is why my initial usage of the word " science like " instead of the word scientific. For the same reason, in the other post titled " experience of the mantra " it is said " Yet, this being the mantra-shAstra the parallels to science end here in terms of a description. I cannot describe such experience using the same terminology used in science and I also have to resort to a different language ? " As for the world being bathed in happiness because of the amount of rudra and chandi homams: The question to ask is did the performers " understand " ** the mantra? If not, the shAstra clearly says that the spells of one has not achieved mantra siddhi or chaitanya do not work. From the people that I have known most mantrin-s who have mastered the prayoga-s never come out to perform public rituals like these. One can simply learn the procedures for these homams and do a shata chandi or sahasra chandi or 10^x chandi without achieving the siddhi of that mantra -- and nothing is going to happen. madhusUdhana sarasvatI has to perform numerous purascharaNa-s over many years just to attain the siddhi of one mantra. So the notion of our rituals/prayoga-s are not scientific because of absence of happiness in the world inspite of public homa-s simply does not hold any water. Bhakti: Another question to ask is " what do you mean by bhakti " ? If you mean singing and dancing saying " hare krishna hare rama " and doing public bhajans like ISKCOn people, then that is definitely not required to acheive mantra siddhi. Furthermore bhakti gets defined differently. For example advaita siddhi of madhusUdana saravati defines bhakti as something like " dedicating oneself to the pursuit of knowledge- GYAna " or something similar. A tAntrika might likewise view bhakti as constant and unfailing performance of the prescribed rituals to our devata-s without fail. As an aside: No-one/Nothing can make the world filled up with happiness ever. That is simply against the law of nature. Do give it some thought. ** When we say understand we are not talking about the literal meaning of the mantra we are talking about " seeing " teh mantra like the R^iShi for that mantra did.
