Mahadeva Temple at Thiruvairanikulam, South Vellarappilly, Aluva Taluk,

Ernakulam District which is about 15kms from Kalady on my return journey from

Sabarimala. Many of our members may be aware of this temple but still for the

benefit of the few who are not aware, I am posting the details:

The significance of this temple is that the doors of the sanctum sanctorum of

Sri Parvathi Devi will be open only for 12 days during the month of Dhanu from

the Thiruvathira day. It is believed that sincere worship at this temple during

this 12 day period ensures both material prosperity and spiritual enlightenment.

The darshan of the divine couple wards off hindrances to marriage and is also a

remedy to matrimonial disharmony. Lakhs of devotees visit the temple during this

twelve day period.

The special significance of the twelve day worship:

In olden times, it is believed Goddess Parvathi Herself prepared the Nivedyam

for Lord Mahadeva in the Temple kitchen. No one was allowed to enter the area of

kitchen during this time. It is believed that a Brahmin, in his eagerness to

know what was happening, came to peep into the kitchen and was amazed at the

sight of the resplendent look of Sri parvathi adorned all over in gold. The

Brahmin called out “Amma Jaganmathaâ€. The Goddess disappeared saying that it

was against the tradition. The Brahmin apologized and pleaded to the Goddess not

to leave the place in anger. The Goddess relented and offered to be back for a

period of twelve days every year from the day of Thiruvathira in the month of

dhanu being Lord’s birth day. The annual visit of the Goddess is being

celebrated with elaborate rituals. Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi in all their

divine glory are believed to shower blessings on every devotee visiting this

temple to offer worship during

this time. Abhishekam to the deity is done with turmeric powder.
