Namaste,

As we all know Chhandas is one of the Vedanga and Pingala Chhandasutra is the

sovereign for the Chhandas shastra.

During my recent run through on the above work, it arised to me that some of the

Chhandas being used are not according to the sutras.

Eg : Mahaganapathi mantra has 28 letters and most of us say gayathri

chhandas/nichrud gayathri chhandas.Regardless to say tantra texts also

supplements this.

However, the sutra says " Oonadhikena NichudBhoorijou " , which means if a mantra

has less syllables than what is required in a particular chhandas it is NIRCHRUD

and if it has more syllables it is BHOORICH.

Going by this the above said Gayathri chanddas for Mahagapathi mantra

contradicts.

Can somebody throw a light on above please.

Regards

Ramachandra Sastry

Namaste.

Chandas of vedanga does not apply to Chandas of Mantra.

Chandas has got many meanings like " svacchanda " etc. Even Siva Panchakshari

which has 5 letters is of Pamktih Chandas which is a mis-match.
