I would like to chant Lalitha sahasranama [sloga form] daily. Could you please

suggest the basic rules / methods to follow.

 

Is initiation from Guru is required to perform this chanting. Please advice.

Shri Bhaskararaya Makhin in his magnum opus " Saubhagya Bhaskara " while

commenting on the 44th sloka of Uttara Pitha says as below:

shrI mantrarAjam yO vetti shrIchakram yah samarchayati

yah kIrtayati nAmAni taM satpAtraM vidurbudhAh //………44

***********************

 

While commenting on the above sloka, Shri Bhasuranandanatha says that :

 

mantrarAhityE nAmakIrtanE(a)dhikArAbhAvEnAdhikAriniShThasya guNasyApi

shUdrAdhItavEdavAkyanyAyEnAprayOjanAt //

 

The above translation runs as:

 

Without " Mantra Jnana / Upadesa " , the chanting of Lalitha Sahasranama is futile

& useless. It is as good as a shUdra (who is an anadhikAri) doing veda

parayana.

 

The mantra jnAna is the vyApaka dharma here for doing chakrArchana as well as LS

parayana. And commenting on what is meant by " mantra rAja " , Shri Bhaskararaya

answers as " mantra rAjam srIvidyAm " . And obviously it is kAdi-vidyA here.

 

So, it is evident that a criterion for LS parayana is upadesa of Panchadasi

mantra. But don't get discouraged.

 

My sincere advice is to approach Shri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamigal of Sringeri

Sarada Pitha and seek his advice regarding this issue. Who can be more

authoritative than His Holiness of Sringeri Amnaya Pitha.

 

Approach His Holiness with gurubhAva by performing the Pada Puja. After the

pAda puja, His Holiness listens to our problems and queries. During that

moment, you seek his blessing & advice. Because, sometimes positive approval

comes from His Holiness Shri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamigal regarding the LS

parayana even though one is not initiated in Mula Vidya as it was in my case

during my first visit to Sringeri some 16 years ago.

 

ajnAnAm jAhnavi tIrtham vidyAtIrtham vivEkinAm

sarvEShAm sukhadam tIrtham bhAratI tIrtham ashrayE….

 

SO, GO TO SRINGERI. PERFORM PADA PUJA TO SHRI BHARATI TIRTHA MAHASWAMIGAL AND

at this moment I would like to share my experience.( I am from Nanganallur,

chennai)

 

somehow I started reading LS from 1991, on a daily basis. (My mother used to

read)

 

I worship Goddess Mookambika (ishta devata) of kollur since then.

 

suddenly I got Introduce by my uncle to His Guru Shri P.N Narayana Sastrigal of

Karunanda Mandali,chennai in the year 2005.

 

Fist I was given Ganapathi Japam, after an year I was given panchadasi,

thereafter Guru padhuka.

 

I believe that it is the will of the Goddess Lalitha parameswari made me chant

the LS for about 12 year and then took me to the GURU whom I have not known

then.

 

Now My Gurunadhar has attained siddhi in the year 2008.

 

What should be next step in this direction, I request can anyone guide me.

I would suggest you to read 2 wonderful books.

 

1) I am That - by Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj

 

Read carefully the book " I AM THAT " by Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj. It is just

marvellous

 

2) Lamps of Light - by Shri MP Pandit (a disciple of Shri TV Kapali Sastry)

 

Shri MP Pandit describes 2 topics called " The Guru " & " The Crisis in Sadhana " .

 

I believe, after reading these 2 books, such crisis would not arise.

I would suggest you to read 2 wonderful books.

 

1) I am That - by Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj

 

Read carefully the book " I AM THAT " by Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj. It is just

marvellous

 

2) Lamps of Light - by Shri MP Pandit (a disciple of Shri TV Kapali Sastry)

 

Shri MP Pandit describes 2 topics called " The Guru " & " The Crisis in Sadhana " .

 

I believe, after reading these 2 books, such crisis would not arise.
