In north India offering Gulal and sindoor is a very common Upachara for pujas and in South Gulal is never used and instead of Sindoor Kumkuma and Turmeric is used. Upasakas use sindoor for Navavarana Puja. What is this Gulal made of and why is it holy? likewise in south of India wearing Pavithram made of Darbha is compulsory but This I have rarely seen in North of India.
