Guest guest
Namaste- I was wondering if anyone on the list may be from the Toronto, Ontario, Canada area, and could recommend a temple in the downtown area (not the outlying communities, as we don't have a car and must take transit) that would be welcoming to someone who is not a born Hindu? I have attended a temple before and am aware of most temple etiquette, I would just like to find a spiritual home closer to my physical dwelling. Thanks in advance for any aid, Blessings of the Mother, ~Devi~
Guest guest
I'm not from Toronto nor a non-hindu. But, found these addresses on the net. Hope some of them are close to your home. http://www.garamchai.com/canada/GTATemples.htm#Toronto
Guest guest
I am not from Toronto either. However, from the list Ganpra has kindly provided, the Meenakshi Amman Temple location on Bloor Street is closest to downtown Toronto. I am familiar with the area. Guest guest
Hi Devi: A great Shakta temple, Sri Rajarajeswari Peetham, lies about three hours from Toronto, in Rush, near Rochester, N.Y. The idea of born Hindu or not born Hindu is not really relevant there. Now, I know you mention you don't have a car, and so a three-hour trip across an international border probably isn't the sugggestion you were hoping for -- but this message isn't necessarily in vain. Please read on! As it happens, Sri Chaithanyananda (Aiya), the head priest of the Rush temple, will be in Toronto this Friday t0 offer a workshop on " The Why & How of Worship. " I think you should go, if at all possible. The promo says: " Aiya will discuss issues such as: What are the requirements for a spiritual prayer? Do time and location matter for prayers? Is there a payback from prayers? Which prayers benefit children/youths and should they be performed? Detailed explanations, based on the biological, chemical and hormonal interactions within the human body, will be provided. Overall, this workshop will enhance your spiritual growth. " Please note that the entire lecture will be conducted in English. When: (Good) Friday April 06th, 2007 Time: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm Where: Sri Sathya Sai School Hall Unit 4, 505 Ellesmere Rd. (Birchmount Rd.) Toronto, Ontario. Contact numbers are (585) 533 1970 and (416) 628 3786 By the way, I believe you will find at this late date that all the places will be reserved. But you know how it goes with these things -- rock shows, sporting events, and even puja lessons. If you want in badly enough, you can get in. ;-) Call, beg, cajole, etc. -- and while you're there, network around, meet people, introduce yourself. These Rajarajeswari Peetham sorts are our people *lol* ... they'll tell you all you need to know about the local temple scene. Listen and learn! Good luck ... Guest guest
Namaste- Thank you very much for everyone's advice! I will look into that talk this Friday, and will go over that list of temples to see if I can contact anyone there to find out schedules, etc. Blessings, ~Devi~
Guest guest
Namaste: I am not too familiar with Toronto, but several years ago I attended a dear friend's wedding in the city. The pandit overseeing the ceremony was from the local Ma Kali Temple (Kali Bari - literally " House of Kali " ). He rather impressed me with his sincerity and his ability to translate and explain the Sanskrit wedding prayers into English for most of the audience. There website is at: http://www.kalibari.org/ Much luck finding a temple to attend. Jai Maa! -- -Santo " Aum Shanti Shanti Shantih.
