There are many kinds of gurus. Obviously the Diksha guru is one who

initiates you into a particular parampara, but before that there are

almost always others. For example, some scriptures mention vartma-

pradarshaka gurus, people who point us in the right direction in the

journey that eventually leads us to our Diksha guru. For me, one of

the first such " gurus " was Kurt Vonnegut, who passed away yesterday.

In observance, I'd simply offer a few quotations from hi work, that I

think might be considered directly relevant to this group:

*****

If I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph:

THE ONLY PROOF HE NEEDED

FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD

WAS MUSIC

*****

What is the purpose of life?

To be

the eyes

and ears

and conscience

of the Creator of the Universe,

you fool.

*****

What is sacred?

Oh, " Romeo and Juliet, " for instance.

And all music is.

*****

Architects give us temples in which something marvelous is obviously

going on. Actually, practically nothing is going on.

Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in

the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies,

you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I

know of, babies: Goddamn it, you've got to be kind.

Peace!

Namaste,

yeah, amazing the way that some people can get us in touch with " our "

divine, while others, perhaps equally worthy, do not touch us at all.

I, personally, have always loved Romeo and Juliet, it was the work

that brought me to the bard. The poetry of Sappho, particularly her

pieces describing the worship of the Goddess or her passionate pleas

to Aphrodite when in heartbreak, moves me deeply. I love reading the

words of the Enheduanna, the ancient Sumerian priestess of Inanna.

These bards, these lovers of the divine, bless us with their gifts

and we are lucky to have them.

Blessings,

Let my every word be a prayer to Thee,

Every movement of my hands a ritual gesture to Thee,

Every step I take a circumambulation of Thy image,

Every morsel I eat a rite of sacrifice to Thee,

Every time I lay down a prostration at Thy feet;

Every act of personal pleasure and all else that I do,

Let it all be a form of worshiping Thee. "

From Verse 27 of Shri Aadi Shankara's Saundaryalahari

More Kurt Vonnegut for spiritual seekers:

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out

on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion.

I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do

afterward.

Life happens too fast for you ever to think about it. If you could

just persuade people of this, but they insist on amassing information.

Say what you will about the sweet miracle of unquestioning faith, I

consider a capacity for it terrifying and absolutely vile!

Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and

finds himself no wiser than before... He is full of murderous

resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their

ignorance the hard way.

There is a tragic flaw in our precious Constitution, and I don't know

what can be done to fix it. This is it: Only nut cases want to be

president.

Humor is an almost physiological response to fear.

1492. As children we were taught to memorize this year with pride and

joy as the year people began living full and imaginative lives on the

continent of North America. Actually, people had been living full and

imaginative lives on the continent of North America for hundreds of

years before that. 1492 was simply the year sea pirates began to rob,

cheat, and kill them.

The chief weapon of sea pirates, however, was their capacity to

astonish. Nobody else could believe, until it was too late, how

heartless and greedy they were.

Charm was a scheme for making strangers like and trust a person

immediately, no matter what the charmer had in mind.

Maturity is a bitter disappointment for which no remedy exists,

unless laughter can be said to remedy anything.

Another flaw in the human character is that everybody wants to build

and nobody wants to do maintenance.

Well, the telling of jokes is an art of its own, and it always rises

from some emotional threat. The best jokes are dangerous, and

dangerous because they are in some way truthful.

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be.

Just because some of us can read and write and do a little math, that

doesn't mean we deserve to conquer the Universe.

A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love

whoever is around to be loved.
