" Puthandu " marks the beginning of the Dravidian New Year in the State. Endless queues of devotees waited at the Meenakshi temple in Madurai, as Hindus believe that offering special prayers on the occasion brings them prosperity. Meenakshi is extraordinarily responsive any time you may choose to approach Her. - DB] " Every year it has been our custom to come to the Meenakshi temple to herald the New Year. It means prosperity to us, " said a devotee. Another devotee thanked Goddess Meenakshi for bestowing her family with prosperity. " I come from a nearby village called Kutturambal. I have been coming here with my family for the last 18 years. We are doing extremely well with Goddess Meenakshi's blessings. My son has cleared his Masters in Business Administration, another son is doing his Masters in Science, " said another devotee. It is believed that Lord Brahma, the God of creation, began creating the world on this day.
