Greetings everyone,

Are the Sapta Matrikas & the Sapta Kannigal the same? The Sri Mushnam

temple in India has a sanctum for the Sapta Matrikas and they are

referred to as Sapta Kannigal.Likewise the Sapta Kannigal temple in

Seremban,Malaysia enshrines them as Varahi,Chamundi etc in human form

(varahi without the boar face)like the sudai forms we see in Mariamman

temple in Singapore. Whereas in village temples in India,Sapta

Kannigal are often represented in a row of seven stone bricks. If they

are different from the Matrikas,I would like to know the individual

names of the Kannigal.

Regards, Mandir Boy.

Dear Shakthis

Om Shakti! Sapta (Seven) Kannigal (Tamil word for Virgin)and

Matrikas are one and the same. The Seven Virgin Goddesses (Sapta

Kannigal or Matrikas) are the Parivaaras of Supreme Mother

AadhiParaaShakti, who is the origin of all. The form in which, whether

stone blocks or human forms you worship them is immaterial. It is the

power of invockation in your heart that matters. In fact the human-like

forms given to them also varies from temple to temple. The Vigrahas are

sculptured based on the description given as mantras or songs in

Khadgamala, SriVidya or other ancient scriptures. In Melmarvathoor

AadhiParaaShakti Siddhar Peetam, Tamil Nadu, India (90 kms South of

Chennai), there is a Sapta Kannigal Temple installed and consecretated

according to the Divine Guidance of Loga Maha Guru Arulthiru Bangaaru

Adigalaar, who Himself is the Divine Embodiment of Mother

AadhiParaaShakti. This temple has no roof and is open to sky.

Melmaruvathoor also has Temple for Maha Prityanghira Devi which has a

unique history there. I will write about it in another posting.

Mother Bless All.

Hi All,

I was searching on the details or history of sapta kanigal. Our family worships sapta kanigal as our kula devata.

My great grandfather has built a temple in my village. The temple is built without any any roof. Its just a small temple with seven idols.

I remember my grandmother use to tell stories of kanigal, stating that they are kanya devatas.

Do you guys have any detail myth relating to it in any kind of books. Please advise.

Guest MURTHHI,N

Saptha mathas are Aides of Supreme Goddess as told in Puranas. They are Brahmi, Kaumari Vaishnavi, and others. They are Mother Goddesses. Whereas Saptha kanyas are our VIRGIN sisters BORN and DIED before their Puberty , of our fore-fathers. The Elders- the FORE FATHERS have made the dead kannigas as kula deivam and as guardians of the successors' families especially the girls. Such Kanyas of the SEVEN hereditary  elders have named them as Saptha Kanyas. A sculptor of stone IDOLS, has given the names of the SAPTHA KANYAS as:: 1.Pattaragai kanya, 2. Deva Kanya, 3. Padma Kanya, 4. Sindhu Kanya, 5. Akatha Kanya, 6. Vana Kanya, 7. Sumathi Kanya.

I am searching for more details. I request those who know more can share......

NOTE:: In every community in the Dravidian culture SAPTHA KANYAS worship is being done as kula deiva valipadu.OR Guardian worship. in our community- 24- Manai Telugu Chettiar 8- Veedu (Makkadayar kothram) we have recently on 14/11/2013, reconstructed and performed kumbabishekham for Seedevi, Boodevi,Samedha Kambaperumal Swamy alongwith Saptha kannigal, at Pungawadi village near ATTUR, in Salem Dt. of TamilNadu, an ABODE where all your Prayers (especially Marriage for the unmarried boys and girls, BOON of child to expectant Mothers.)are answered and fulfilled.
