Guest guest
Namaste That is a great story. So true. Swami told a story on the same theme. A young girl heard that the local priest needed milk every morning to perform his puja. She asked him if she could supply the milk. She was a simple girl, with much devotion, and this was one way she could help this world. The priest agreed and said she had to be on time or his puja would be delayed. So the next morning she arose, and filled her pitcher with milk and went down to the river to await the boatman to take her across. He soon came but indicated he had to wait for others to come. She was concerned because she would be late and the priest could not begin his puja. Finally the boatman took her across and she ran to the temple. The priest was upset and she asked his forgiveness and said she would be on time the next day. She arose early the next day and took her milk and went to the river. Again she had to wait and was late. The priest was again delayed and told her that if she was not on time the next day, he would find another to bring the milk. She sat quietly while he performed his puja. Then he gave a discouse on the power of Ram's name. He said that chanting His name would carry one across the ocean of worldliness. She was thrilled by the lecture and vowed to chant Ram's name. The next morning she arose very early and went to the river. The boatman was nowhere to be found. She paced the river bank, back and forth, looking for a way to get across. She knew the time was short and so wanted to get the priest the milk. She so wanted to serve the Lord in this way. She had to get across the river. But how? Suddenly she remembered the priest's words, " chant the name of Ram and He will carry you across the ocean " . She began chanting, " Ram, Ram, Ram " and took a step towards the river. Still chanting, " Ram, Ram Ram " , she found herself walking across the surface of the river like it was a field of flowers. She arrived at the other side, and hurried to the temple to deliver the milk. The priest was standing at the door waiting. " Where have you been " ?, he asked. " And how did you get across the river? The boatman was sick today and could not work " . She quickly responded, " I followed your advice and Ram carried me across the river " . " What did you say? " he asked. " How did you really get across the river " ? " Come, and I will show you " , she said. They walked together to the river. She stood on the bank, and began chanting Ram's name. And, without hesitation, she walked onto the surface of the river. When she got to the middle of the river, she turned and called to the priest, " come on, Ram will carry you across, just chant His name. " He hesitated, then began chanting. As he stepped into the river, the hem of his pants got wet. He stepped out farther and the leg of his pants got wet. He gave up and turned back to the bank. He could not get across the river. He did not have pure devotion for the Lord. So, pray for pure devotion. To prove his point, Lord Shiva took on the guise of an old man while Parvathi accompanied him as old lady. While bathing in the Ganges, the old man pretended to slip and fall into water. He started floundering in the water and seeing this his old wife cried out, " someone please save my husband. He cannot swim and is drowning " . As the other bathers rushed up the lady again cried out, " only a sinless man should save my husband . If he is touched by an impure one he will die. " > > Hearing this the people turned back; they were unsure and did not want to be that cause of death of the old man. Only one person, a simple man named Sankaran came forward. He had been told by his master that the only way he could get rid of his sins was to bathe in the Ganges and since he had implict faith in his master's words considered himself sinless now that he had bathed in the Ganges. He jumped into the water and rescued the old man. > > Lord Shiva said to Parvathy, " of the thousands that are bathing here today only this man who saved me will get Moksha, for only he had complete faith.
