Guest guest
Namaste Group: I began chanting the chandi path one or two chapters a day within a 7 day period mainly because I have trouble pronouncing the Sanskrit, and I have to carefully follow the MP3 of Swamiji chanting. Today I chanted chapters 2 & 3 and experienced an overwhelming amount of energy. I felt I HAD to do a Shiva puja to balance things out. Is this a normal thing? I had planned to chant the Chandi Path daily and do a Durga Puja daily, but I can't seem to handle the energy. Am I doing something wrong here? Thanks, Shankari Kali

Guest guest
Namaste Shankari Kali, in response to the matter of handling the energy you talked about, a verse came to mind. Perhaps it is of help to you: " The earth rocked and the mountains shook, and the Gods were extremely pleased and joyfully cried out to the lion rider, " Victory be yours " ! " . (chapter 2, vs.34) JAI JAI MAA! There were times when the shakti was very strong, in my experience. There were ecstatic times, and times when my mind became so dull the words ran all together on the page and my tongue became thick so that the syllables fairly drooled out, a little at a time, it seemed. As I understand this tradition (which isn't very much, I admit) the Chandi Path represents the choicest of the offerings, the highest of the vidyas this path represents. Guest guest
(from nirmalananda) By all means ask him. He will be delighted. I believe Maa and Swamiji bless our efforts at reciting Chandi, and keep us from any ill effects - if such effects are possible. I once asked them what to do because it says somewhere in the text, if you only have limited time, to only recite the second episode. Maa and Swamiji told me not to worry, and just recite however I could. I believe we're all protected by Maa and Swamiji in our efforts. But, if you specifically ask for blessings, it will make you feel even more happy!!!Jai Chandi Maa.Shankari Kali <shankari_kali wrote: Namaste Chris:Can we ask Swamiji for a blessing in our studies of the Chandi Path? Guest guest
Hi Shankari Kali, In the Chandi it says that if you cannot do it in its entirety you should do only the middle part (chapters 2,3, and 4) [i made an error here in my first version of this post - I deleted it and revised - thanks to Kalia for pointing my error out to me]. This is because the shakti can be unbalancing if it is not done in sequence and in order. Guest guest
Hi Shankari Kali, Sure you can, if you feel the need or desire! Just go to the main page of the Devi Mandir site and look for the contact link to send an email to Swamiji. It doesn't matter that you are still learning and cannot chant the entire text (I can't either), and it is good to have Swamiji's notice. Oh, I made a mistake in my first response to you in this thread. Kalia was kind enough to point it out to me. If you cannot chant the entire text, it is said that one should recite the MIDDLE episode, chapters 2,3, and 4. I'm sorry if I confused you in any way (I have revised the original post). But, as Swamiji has said many times, it is alright to chant in any way that is best for you while you are learning. Jai Maa! Guest guest
Namaste' I wanted to jump in on this thread to tell you all about a great conversation I had with another devotee at the Mandir when I was there last week. We were actually talking about this very idea and he was explaining why we should chant the middle episode. I hope I relate this correctly and that it is as helpful for you as it was for me. So, this is my understanding: The first episode is our life before we begin our search for God. We are wandering around losing our kingdom, our family, all our riches, etc. And, these things are so important to us in the world of objects and relationships. It is painful to know that our lives are so unstable. Then at some point through the grace of God and Guru we enter into the forest and begin to learn that there is more to life than all that stuff. Once we get to that understanding we move into the middle episode. In this episode Maa begins to help us in our struggles against those asuras and demons. This is where we are in our lives as devotees. We are beginning to come to the understanding that we don't do this alone and that Chandi Maa is here with us, fighting the battle and helping us with our demons. This is why this episode is important for us in this stage... we NEED to know that she is with us, we are in the midst of the battle and when we are fighting we can sometimes lose track of the reality of God, so She stays here to help us fight. The middle episode is where we live as sadhaks and so is of great value in our growth. In the third episode we (and of course Maa)are even deeper in the fight but we are at the point where we can surrender all to Her, and that is when she gobbles up the raktabijas and we begin to get a glimpse of our true selves. This episode isn't as important for us yet because in some ways we can't really understand it until we can truly let go and give it ALL to Her. That's why I like to ask for Pure Devotion in ch 13 when She offers a boon. I believe that the devotion will allow me to move into this third episode and give me the ability to truly surrender all that I am to Her. Obviously, my understanding is very limited but I hope this has been of help. In my Chandi practice what I like to do is to take one chapter and sit with it for a week of more and then move onto another. I love the experience of really learning what each chapter says and how it sounds and feels in my mouth as I chant the slokas. Thankfully Swamiji has said that we should each study based on our own capacity. I've found that through consistent practice my capacity has increased and continues to do so. Guest guest
I think the initial post in this thread has been misunderstood. Sankar was quoting a post from last year--2006. Spring Navratri has already past and he posted this in response to the question about chanting less than the entire Chandi Path. I believe there was another post where Swamiji answered about exactly what should be chanted when doing the Chandi Path over multiple asanas (with breaks). I tried to locate it, but can not. Maybe someone else knows. But doing this sankalpa anyway could never be a bad idea! Jai Maa! Guest guest
Hi Y'all! I just wanted to let everyone know (since it seems more than a couple of folks didn't notice the post number) that the post from Nanda referring to a Chandi sankalpa is from a couple of years ago. Sankar Viswanathan dragged it out from the archives to help Shankari Kali, I think. There is no group Chandi sankalpa at this time. Hope nobody's embarrassed by this. It's not the first time, and I'm sure it won't be the last, that someone's responded to an old post. Jai Maa! Guest guest
Ha! This makes sense. I thought there was some post-navaratri chanting going on, in honor of navaratri! it was a little strange to me but i was on board. still, i suppose it never hurts to start chanting Chandi. An idea - if folks here wanted to start a sankalpa to chant the chandi as prescribed, it might be a good practice, even if navaratri has already passed. shanti -sundari On 05 Apr 2007 07:45:09 -0700, Chris Kirner <chriskirner1956 wrote: Hi Y'all! > > I just wanted to let everyone know (since it seems more than a couple > of folks didn't notice the post number) that the post from Nanda > referring to a Chandi sankalpa is from a couple of years ago. Guest guest
Thank you Morningsong, this is really insightful and gives lots of food for thought - really great ! Another way that can be a good way to practice Chandi is in conjunction with the idea of sitting in one asana, and increasing the time by 5 minutes every month. Just starting at the begining (doing all or some of the appendages) and then doing as much as possible in the alloted time. After a month, the alloted time goes up by 5 minutes. At first it will take many sittings to complete the text, but after a few months, it will only take two or three sittings. And eventually, only one sitting.By simply chanting until the time is up, this takes pressure off thinking "I have to do this much or this many chapters", etc. Also chanting Chandi is a great way to push through the fire of increasing the length of our asana. This is the method for increasing the asana 5 minutes a month using the Chandi Path.Jai Maa Chandi !!!!c_morningsong <shaktimaa wrote: Namaste' I wanted to jump in on this thread to tell you all about a great conversation I had with another devotee at the Mandir when I was there last week. Guest guest
I am sorry that I had created a lot of confusion with my posts. My post was specifically in reply to Shankari Kali's question about reciting Chandi. My posts are for information purpose only. That is to the best of my knowledge. Very often I may be wrong. I am always excited when I hear about chanting of Sri Sri Chandi. Because of problems with arthritis, I find it difficult to sit in an asana for any length of time.
