Question from Shankari Kali:Do Hindus read a scripture while the person is dying or right after death to help them pass over? Also what do Hindus believe happens to the soul right after death? What is the process of passing over and how does it relate to rebirth?Swamiji's response:Both. If it is possible to read scriptures during the transition, then we will want to do so. Also after the passing it is appropriate. After death the soul mingles with the universal soul until its individual propensities cause it to take on a unique identity once again. Then it takes birth in an environment most conducive to fulfilling its own destiny.Question from Shankari Kali:Why are people born to individuals who abuse them? Do they choose this or is this karmic? How do our children choose to be born to us?Swamiji's response:Unfortunately people receive the fruits of their karma. They also have the capacity to choose to change it. Children choose the families to take birth in which they can receive the nourishing environment to accomplish as much of their outstanding karma as possible. I don't know that it as much a intellectual decision making process as it is a karmic attraction. That is, our karma pulls us towards the appropriate family for us.
