Namaste Sushuddha,

here's what I found with help of the dictionary. I am no expert in

Sanskrit, but perhaps this will help you:

sarva- all, every

baadhaa- affliction, obstacle, distress (the verb 'baadh': press,

force, harass, resist, oppress, hem in, trouble: so I understand

'baadhaa' to mean anything that resists or tries to hem in the flow of

Divine Love)

prasham (verb): to subdue, to conquer, to become calm, pacify, soothen

(to me this means that the resistance which causes the trouble has

been taken away; like stones removed from a stream)

trailokya: the three 'lokas' or worlds (or three 'bodies': gross,

subtle, causal)

a-khila: without a gap, complete, whole

Ishvari: Mistress, Queen (so there is no thing or no place in the

three worlds that She is not, where She does not control)

evam: thus, in such a way

eva: just so (evameva: precisely in such a way)

tvayaa: by you (instr.)

kAryam: must be done, caused, effected

asmad: (away from)us

vairi: enemy

vinashana: causing to disappear, removal, distruction, annihilation

with love,

Henny

Namaste Henny,

Excellent, thank you! I like contemplating the meaning of the mantra while I chant it, letting the understandings echo off of eachother and get deeper and deeper, and that will be very helpful.

Hi Sushuddha,

Notwithstanding Hennyji's wonderful personal translation, there is a

pdf of the sarva badha mantra with translation in bi-fold card and

wallet size formats.

Here is the link:

And the file is SarvaaBadhaa.pdf (look near the bottom of the page)

Namaste!

I have been a silent but appreciative member of this group for a

while. I have been really impresssed with the spirit of sharing and

the love and compassion this group enjoys. I also feel it has a lot to

do with Shreemaa and Swamiji who are able to spread their peace, love

and harmony through all who are associated with them.

I was wondering if the following explanation for " sarvabadha

prashamanam " would be of help to susuddha'ji. It's from a Bharatiya

Vidya Bhavan publication by Swami Siddhinathananda whom I also knew

personally.

" The Devas said: Akhileshvari, traylokasya sarvabadhaprashamanam

karyam [ O supreme Ruler of the whole universe, please remove all the

miseries of the three worlds.]

Evam eva asmadvairivinashanam cha tvaya karyam [ in this manner, you

ought also to destry our enemies.]

The Devas prayed: O Supreme Ruker of the universe, please remove all

the miseries of the three worlds and also please destroy in future our

enemies as you have done now.

Pranams to Shreemaa and Swamiji and to each one of you,

Devi

p.s. i noticed that there are others here whom I share a name with

....my full name is Lakshmi Devi Nair but I have always been called Devi.

Good to see you, Devi! Glad you finally came out of hiding.

Their influence certainly influences all of us who love and rely on them.

Dear Henny: thank you so much for this study in the meanings of this

mantra. I have just started working with it and it gives me such

inspiration to have these words to float in my mind and heart,

deepening understanding and appreciation of it's beauty. Jennifer
