Namaste All, I attended the evening Ganga aarti in Rishikesh on Sunday and I wanted to share the experience. When I reached the steps on the banks of the Ganga, a group of young sanskrit students (some even 8yrs old) from the Parmarth Ashram were singing the Shiv Mahatmn Strote to the accompanyment of tabla and harmonium. Someone gave me the booklet and pointed out the verse and I joined in. This followed with the Shiv Arti. After this, 108 offerings were made to the blazing homa fire (set up right there) to the chanting of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. At this point it all got a little surreal and for a moment I thought I was in the Devi Mandir (or as Swamji said 'Rishikesh-west'). Next, the Hanuman Chalisa was sung and all the crowd (which just kept growing) joined in. Having recently attended the Hanuman Chalisa class conducted by Swamiji, it had a

special significanse for me. By now the Sun was dipping into the river and the Ganga was shimmering gold. Some five large lamps and twenty or more smaller lamps were lit for Arti and the singing for the Ganga Ma began. I did not have a book for that and could not sing along so I simply closed my eyes and heard Ma's song to the Ganga. My heart was filled with joy and love for the Mother-the giver of life. After this everyone set their offering of flowers and lamp and incense, afloat in the river. It was very beautiful. Ganga Ma Ki Jai!! Neelima
