Guest guest
Namaste' I am a long time reader of this list and I don't remember covering this subject. I consider myself a devotee of Ma Kali and I would never want to do anything that is offensive to her. I fell compelled to get a tattoo of a verse out of the Kali Puja book. It is very close to me and I want it close to my heart. I feel it will be a constant reminder to keep my mind on important and not trivial things. So my question is is it ok? I have read all the books I have and I can find nothing specific. I have also searched the internet and I can't find anything definitive. The verse is : om kali kali mahakali kalike papaharini dharmarthamoksade devi narayani namostute. It would be written in Samskrta. Thank you, Christy
Guest guest
--- Christy, there is no need to do it on your body. If you are serious tattoo the mantra into your mind. ==== In , " Christy " <cthulhukitty wrote: > > Namaste' > I am a long time reader of this list and I don't remember covering > this subject. Guest guest
Namaste Christy:I believe it is customary for Indian women to Henna tattoo their hands. Henna tattooing is common in India, and in the Middle East I believe. On another note, sometimes people wear lockets with Sanskrit verses written in them. Frankly I can't see why not if you can find someone to tattoo with Sanskrit lettering.Shanti Om,Shankari Kalikaliananda_saraswati <kaliananda_saraswati wrote: Christy i might be wrong but i do agree with vinayami's comment. Guest guest
Namaste, I have seen an Indian Saint with what i think to be Henna tattooing on her feet, and have seen documentaries of both the hands and feet being done for religious/cultural reasons. I do not get the impression though that this is the t ype of tattooing Christy is referring too. Very recently i saw in a local paper where young pop singer has I think two lines of SanSkrit tatooed down her body from her midsection to the thigh. Personally, since i do not know the real significance of such action, i would want to discuss this with a True Spiritual Teacher and would want to be sure of the type of person who would perform the act of tattooting. May Goddess kali guide your decision Christy. Jai Maa , Shankari Kali <shankari_kali wrote: > > Namaste Christy: > > I believe it is customary for Indian women to Henna tattoo their hands. Guest guest
Namaste' Thanks to all of you who've replied today. Today I was blessed to bump into a friend who is a renunciate and she seems to agree with Vinayami. We had a very good discussion about the vibrations of the sounds of the mantra and how it helps to tune your mind to the proper frequency. This made me start thinking about what is compelling me to do this. She asked me if it was a decoration and I replied that it would not be for ornament, it is more like a commitment. At the end of our discussion she said there is no dogma, no taboo and that I should jap more but did not tell me not to do it. While searching my heart and mind it started to become very clear to me that I am a visual person. As a visual artist by trade I tend to think in pictures not words. While meditating the focus always drifts to a vision of Ma. I am happiest when surrounded by beautiful images of Ma. I can look at a photo of her and it brings tears of joy to my eyes. So maybe this is why I want a visual mantra close to my heart. I am not as consistent in my practices as I wish I were but she is always on my mind. I feel as though I am being compelled to do this more than wanting to do this. Luckily I have found a very respectful artist but I am going to wait for advice from a spiritual expert. One of my friend says not to do it if I have any doubts. In my heart I have no doubts, they're all in my head. As always everyone here is a blessing and of course Maa and Swamiji are indescribably wonderful. Thanks again, Christy , " maadevi55 " <maadevi55 wrote: > > > Namaste, > > I have seen an Indian Saint with what i think to be Henna tattooing on > her feet, and have seen documentaries of both the hands and feet being > done for religious/cultural reasons. Guest guest
Namaste: Swami has taught us that constant repeatition of a mantra will make us one with it. After some time, the mantra will do us, instead of us doing the mantra. It will become the theme and focus of our life. So, one way to keep it with you always is to take a sankalpa to repeat it daily for some length of time. After some time, in addition to repeating it during your sankalpa, you will find yourself repeating it whenever you mind is idle, or walking the dog, or doing the dishes. As the mind and body becomes habituated to it, your will purify and Kali will give you Her darshan. Then you will reach the goal of repeating the mantra: you will be one with Kali. Also, Swami has taught that there is a method of creating a Kavach, or amulet / locket, which one wears a certain way. It would contain the mantra written. Swami has not taught us the technique to prepare the amulet. If you like, I can forward him a message.
