Guest guest
Chapter 2 is a graphic description of the fierce battle in which Devi vanquishes Mahishasura, the Great Ego. Mahishasura is clearly the bad guy and enemy of the Gods in this episode. It is therefore startling to find a Mahishasura puja as part of the Cosmic Puja (p. 332 in the Second Edition of the Cosmic Puja book). Why is there a puja to the bad guy and enemy of the Gods? Here are my thoughts, but I'd appreciate others' insights. Perhaps a clue is that the Cosmic Puja gives Mahishasura another name, the " Great Ruler of Duality, " as an alternative to the name the " Great Ego. " Control of duality means no ego, and no ego means control of duality. Mahishasura's power over the Gods, which enabled him to displace them from their divine abode, lies in the fact that even the Gods would not be manifest without duality. Therefore, even the Gods must yield to the Ruler of Duality, who is the Great Ego, and we acknowledge and show our respect to such power with puja.
