Namaste Srini,

thank you for this link. I have a few questions. I clicked on the

" recipes " link and see the diferent offerings for the different

months. (http://www.shreemaa.org/drupal/node/300)

First question: during the month Viashak, it says to offer Gur. What

is that?

Second question: Is there a special and separate way to offer this if

we are not doing the cosmic puja? For example, at the moment I am

doing Saraswati puja. Would this item be the food offering? Can I

offer this and another food? I like to feed my family the prasad from

the puja, and I'm not sure that a plate of butter and honey, or Gur(!)

would satisfy. :)

Do I offer both?

Third, there are three separate boxes of information. How do we

reconcile these oferings? For example, if the first day of the lunar

fortnight is a sunday, do we offer ghee or rice pudding? And then

should we somehow incorporate the monthly offering into this as well?

Fourth, what is flat rice? is it the same a regular rice or some

special variety. i have never heard of it.

Last question: Do we follow this 'recipe' if we are doing Shiva puja,

or is it only for Goddess pujas? If so, what is the 'recipe' for Shiva

offerings?

Thank you Srini, for your help with this.

Dear Ambika,

Jaggery or Gur is a coarse, unrefined sugar made from the sap of

certain palm trees or from sugar cane juice. In South India we call

istvellam. Light brown in color.

It is used in certain recipes to make sweets and puddings instead of

sugar. Less sweet than sugar. Better for diabetics.

Jaggery is most often available in cake form, and ranges from fairly

crumbly to nearly rock-hard. It is available in Indian markets.

You can combine the weekly offerings wth the offerings for the month

and the offering by the day of the lunar fortnight. That would three

offerings every day. Or pick one or two.

These are special to the Divine Mother and are from the Devi

Bhagavatam. There are separate lists for other Gods like Shiva and Vishnu.

Whatever Puja you do you can offer the items on the list. And if the

family prefers chocolate cake offer that too. If you don't use ithe

item on the list on the same day, accumulate it and cook something

with it after you build a significant stash (if it is not perishable).

Flattened Rice or Poha you get in an Indian store. These flakes of

rice swell when they absorbs water, milk or any other liquids whether

hot or cold. The most common recipe I know of is Upma made from Poha.

Lord Krishna loves this (look for the story of Sudama on the internet).

Hope this helps.
