Karen responded to Devi:

Namate Devi,Thank you so very much for these suggestions. It was so kind of you. Iwill note them and try them today. Yesterday I listened to Maa chantthe Durga mantra from the Durga Puja and that helped a lot. You hitthe/my nail on the head about panic attacks!Jai Maa,Karen

Wow, Karen ~ I saw your earlier post but did not make the connection with panic attacks until you and Devi exchanged a few more posts. I developed Panic Disorder, in 1991, which I am still being treated for. I also had to quit working, but it was not the Panic Attacks alone ~ I had several chronic illnesses getting started, but did not know until almost 15 years later what they were. But I can attest to how debilitating panic attacks can be. I have fainted a number of times, and, yes, at the base of it all is fear.

I think that perhaps what many people do not understand is that a panic attack is an extremely physical externalization or reaction by the physical body to a fear trigger. You are immediately in "fight or flight" mode; you may feel like you are a bit outside of your body; you may get "tunnel" vision where the world around you seems hazy and far away. In my struggle with my attacks, which I still get, it helps me to know that I am not in any real danger; it helps me to have a tool like the Durga mantra or others that I can immediately turn to; and it helps me to realize it is not my fault that I have these attacks, but there are things I can do to lessen their effects.

And I too, absolutely glommed on to the Durga mantra as my life raft. It has helped me so much. And though I am not rid of the attacks, my situation regarding them is much better. Durga is the Protector; She is the Removal of Obstacles (and what greater obstacle is there than fear); She is the Reliever of Difficulties. And She even gives us Her Armor. We are truly blessed to have Swamiji's translation of this ancient text for worship.

Namaste Linda,

Thank you for adding information in your reply that is bringing me

relief. What I did with the Durga Mantra was copy it onto a CD from my

Durga Puja CD. I put in it one of those tiny portable players and

connect it to a pillow speaker and then rest on my bed listening and

dozing. There are about 40 minutes of Durga Mantras on that Puja CD.

For me, listening to Maa's voice is more soothing than chanting myself

these days. I don't feel alone when She is talking to me.

Jai Maa!
