Q + A with Swami: Asuras?

Namaste all family: Here is Swami's response about the meaning of Asuras.

Namaste Manjushri,

Dev comes from the root - div, to shine. The devas are the shining

ones. Suras is another name for the Gods. Asuras refers to the

opposite of shining. It means bound by attachment.

The devas are forces of unity. Asuras are forces of individuality.

Thanks Vish, it's very kind of you to take our questions to Swamiji.

And Thank You Swamiji for the explicit explanation. So Asuras would be

the Dark Forces.

Is there any geographical/historical connotation? Or do we all have

both the shining and dark forces within us?

he did mention some about this in last nights class, but it just made

me even more curious. here is what i jotted down

Persian culture – asur

Assyria

Syria - Shur

when Visnu covered 3 steps he covered

Mohendrodaro

Persia

Greeks

then my questions were..

what is the link between Syria and asura meaning those who are always

looking out through the senses

And sura or deva – those who look within, is india land of the devas?

is this pointing to some geographical rivalry?

Namaste Dan,

What you have written is very interesting!!!! So he did mention

geographic regions!!! And your question - please let me know if you

get a response.

There are deep philosophical differences in different geographical

regions. How interesting it would be to know more.

What do Vishnu's 3 steps symbolise?

Helloooo Vish! can you help again. Please ask Swamiji for some more

details!!! And for an answer to Dan's question.
