Guest guest
Respected Swamiji, I was wondering what was the purpose of reciting the sankalpa prior to the prayers. Why should we mention the place of worship, day month etc. Also for married women which is the correct gotra to use in the sankalpa, the husbands or her fathers family. Thank you, Many pranams at your holy feet, ruchi

Guest guest
Namaste Ruchi, Swamiji has inspired so many of us with knowledge and the understanding of how and why we perform worship according to one's gotra lineage. He discusses many aspects of your question in the " Cosmic Puja Video " Class #3, which can be found on the left side of our Homepage under the heading, Videos. May all of your sankalpas be strong and fulfilling! Guest guest
Namaste, to all! I thought that for the purpose of the sankalpa the gotra was always the name of the seer connected with the family. In my case that would be the seer of the lineage of my guru, which would be Satyananda.(as it is given in the Devi Mandir books) If I am not understanding that correctly, would someone please enlighten me? According to what I have learned, the sankalpa is a means of identifying the worshipper and his/her location as completely as possible, so that the fruits of the worship will come back to that person. Something great that I have just learned through the Cosmic puja classes is that you can insert the names of loved ones or anyone you want to benefit when you chant the sankalpa by just placing ca after your name and then inserting their name. I love the idea of extending the grace of the puja to more and more people. I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who wants to learn the whys and wherefores of puja to take the Cosmic Puja classes on the Devi Mandir website or any of the puja classes (perhaps starting with the beginner classes). The Chandi Path classes will go into great detail about the Navarna Mantra (Aim Hrim Klim Chamundayai Vicce) and how to bring the Goddess into your life. These can be found under Videos on the website. http://shreemaa.org/ Jai Shree Maa! Jai Swamiji! Guest guest
Thank you so much for your kind replies. The one thing I still find confounding is though, when we are praying to all knowing divinity why is there a need to identify ourselves. If anybody can help me with this I would appreciate it. Guest guest
in this logic also the question would come. if there is all knowing divinity then why would we need to pray to it? the easiest answer for me is that setting sankalpa and praying to god that already is everywhere is good for us. it transforms us. stating sankalpa is stating a vow. imagine if we did our new years resolutions with a little more firmness and clarity like sankalpa. then we wouldnt be able to go back on our word so easily. if i sit down to do puja and one thought comes in and says " get up this is boring" i might listen. if i state my sankalpa that i am here now universe, every energy in the universe that can help me stay here and not listen to those little voices in my mind come help me! then when that voice comes we say " sorry i told the whole universe that i was going to complete this" and its not as easy to allow a simple distraction to throw us off. namaste all! ruchibabbar <ruchibabbar Sat, Jul 18, 2009 6:01 pm [www.ShreeMaa.org] Re: the purpose of sankalpa Thank you so much for your kind replies. Guest guest
Yes, I agree. The sankalpa is not so much for Supreme Divinity as it is for us, the individuals performing the sankalpa to strenghthen us. Also, in stating the vow in this way you are making a series of true statements about yourself that cannot be disputed one after another in a list. Then, at the end you say you are going to do certain things for the pleasure of the Deity. This gives that vow the force of truth. "I have made all these statements that are indisputably true and just like they are true, so is this vow true." --- On Mon, 7/20/09, bmarley343 <bmarley343 wrote: bmarley343 <bmarley343Re: [www.ShreeMaa.org] Re: the purpose of sankalpa Date: Monday, July 20, 2009, 11:08 AM in this logic also the question would come. if there is all knowing divinity then why would we need to pray to it?the easiest answer for me is that setting sankalpa and praying to god that already is everywhere is good for us. it transforms us. stating sankalpa is stating a vow. imagine if we did our new years resolutions with a little more firmness and clarity like sankalpa. then we wouldnt be able to go back on our word so easily. if i sit down to do puja and one thought comes in and says " get up this is boring" i might listen. if i state my sankalpa that i am here now universe, every energy in the universe that can help me stay here and not listen to those little voices in my mind come help me! then when that voice comes we say " sorry i told the whole universe that i was going to complete this" and its not as easy to allow a simple distraction to throw us off. namaste all! ruchibabbar <ruchibabbar@ >Sat, Jul 18, 2009 6:01 pm[www.ShreeMaa. org] Re: the purpose of sankalpa Thank you so much for your kind replies.
