Guest guest
Dear AllIMHO, The nicest aspect of Chapters 1 , 4 and 11 are the Stutis to the Goddess. These songs make the chapters more enjoyable in a way. None (well okay a little) of the nasty fighting going on and in the other chapters - "he attacked with a trident, She cut it off with a sword, he picked up a pike , She cut it off with an arrow .... yada yada yada".. There is SOMETHING magical about praising the Goddess - especially when we chant the verses of praise with feeling, the Sanskrit seem to roll more comfortably on the tongue. How suitable this chapter is for many of us - our Consciousness is asleep, and appealing to Her with great devotion is the remedy. And hence, the second half of verse 90 , "Netrasya nasika bahu hrdayebhyas tathorasah" is one of the most thrilling verses of this chapter, where we watch the Goddess emerge from within us in our eyes, nose, arms, heart, mouth. As Swamiji says in his "Study of Chapter One" - "Feel Her wake up. Feel that consciousness waking up inside of you"Here are verses that trip me up during the chanting and I constantly switch one for the other- "sa tatrashram amadrakshid.." Verse 10"tatra viprashram ..." Verse 17Questions:What is the one aspect of Chapter 1 that really calls out to you? What is your favorite verse and why? Can you share any experiences on chanting/learning of Chapter 1?Chandi Maa Ki JAINanda
Guest guest
Very Interesting Nanda! You have arrived at the crux of the Chandi! It is the identification that is thrilling! Guest guest
My favorites in Chapter 1 are: verses 57-58, verse 64, and verses 72-87. All of these speak directly of the glory and greatness of the Divine Mother, and they are therefore thrilling. I agree with the idea of familiarizing oneself first with the stutis within the Chandi. They are some of the most wonderful verses, and learning them well is a fine aid to comprehension of Sanskrit. The Sanskrit of the stutis, and of the Chandi in general, is simpler that that of some of the Angas, so more appropriate for beginning students. Guest guest
Namaste Nanda Thanks for this joyful and interesting discussion on the Chandi. To answer your questions Chapter 1 really helps me to remember how our life is like that of Surath and Samadhi -- we know we are bound - and yet we are bound helplessly! It is a reminder to offer everything to God and that only Divine Mother can wake us up and help us! I love the fact that Krishna and Kali are the heroes of the chapter - with such an beautiful combination what else can be the shakti -- only NANDA! Ok - i have a question for all of you, please help! In verse 51, the Rishi says that " Just as humans, the capacity of understanding exists in all animals.... " -- later He talks of birds feeding their little ones. What is " this understanding " ? How does this relate to greed of human beings that he talks about later -- and also to the faculty of discrimination. To be honest, every time i read the chapter, i have this doubt and i am so happy Nanda is giving us all an opportunity to think about it together! Thank you! Guest guest
Namaste Ramya; Every animal knows instinctivley what their dharma is. To do what their parents did before them. To reproduce and care for the future generations as their parents did for them. Insureing that their species has a place on this earth. To make a contrabution to the whole. They don't have to think about it, it is just there. It is only in the egotisim of thought that we forget what it is we are supposed to do. We all have this instinct in us as well, it is just burried in all those thoughts. A humans dharma may be a little different from an animals but it is still uncomplicated. Guest guest
Namaste Vinay and Everybody, Vinay -- Thanks for your response! From what you say -- If we just live instinctively (like the animals) and give and take care we are ok. If we have expectations (like it say in later verses of Chandi) we are caught in a whirl-wind of Maya and suffer (like Surath and Samadhi). Is my understanding correct? What is the role of discrimination? Where is God in this play? Thank you for the discussion! Guest guest
Namaste Dear Ones, Many thanks for this discussion. Dear Ramya, I think that verse 51 is saying that like humans, the animals and birds understand the consequences of attachment but whereas the animals and birds release their offspring to grow into their own, we as humans tend for the greater part to keep our offspring near around us expecting to be taken care of by them when they reach adulthood. In this way discrimination is replaced by complacency. Guest guest
Hello Vinay, I think animals suffer a great deal and that they have emotions, but that they have no choice or thought about what they do compared to what we as individual human beings have the potential to do to change and or overcome suffering. Ego is often being beat up but as part of evolution where would mankind be without it to work through? I don't think our Dharma is just a little different, I think it vastly different along with areas of mind that can be very complex... with complex not being a bad thing if wisdom is used to balance it. As for the Earth Mother she is a different ORDER of Being, a very great being of giving! And I think she has a different type of and place in evolution compared to that of a human being or soul. Good day, Bob , " vinayami22 " <vinayami22 wrote: > > Namaste Ramya; > Every animal knows instinctivley what their dharma is. To do what their parents did before them.
