four arms versus eight . . .

I'm working my way through Swamiji's Chandi video classes, and am up to class

#31, where Swamiji mentions that Mahakali, Mahalaksmi, and Mahasaraswati are of

the middle tier of deities having four arms. I didn't know that there was a

hierarchy, so to speak, of forms of the deities that is also signified by the

number of arms.

 

Can anyone say more about this?
