Dear Nirajji,

Here is some information on Atrimaharshi

SAGE ATRI

Maharshi Atri was one of the manasputras of Lord Brahma and is known as Prajapati. His wife Ansuyaa was the sister of the sage Kapila who was regarded as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Sage Kardam and Devhuti were Atri's father and mother-in-law. As his name implied, sage Atri was the possessor of all the three qualities Sat (pure), Raja (medium) and Tama (dark) and was a supreme devotee. Similarly, his better half, Ansuyaa was also a great devotee. When Lord Brahma ordered them to commence the creation of the universe, both of them thought of performing penance before beginning it. Their objective was not for having children but for the realization of the Lord. Pleased with their penance, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva appeared before them. But they were too immersed in

their penance to be aware of their arrival. When all the three deities awakened them, they opened their eyes to see the 3 Gods and fell at their feet. The 3 deities became even more pleased with their truthfulness, dedication and love and asked them for a boon. But after the realization of all the 3 deities with their physical eyes, they had no more desire left in their heart but since it was the order of Lord Brahma to help them in the process of creation and since Lord Brahma himself was present there too, they requested all the 3 deities to take birth as their children. All the 3 deities who are always controlled by the wishes of a true devotee gave consent by saying 'So be it' (Tathasthu). In due course of time, Lord Brahma took birth as the 'Moon', Lord Vishnu as Dattareya and Lord Shiva as sage Durvasa respectively. Ansuyaa's feelings were undescribable. No other thoughts came to her mind. All the time, she used to be very busy looking after their

needs. Pleased with Ansuyaa's chastity and her dedication towards her husband, Lord Rama visited her Ashram while going into exile and gave Sita an opportunity, the privilege of listening to her discourses. Sage Atri's total devotion towards Lord Rama can be understood from the following couplet:VINATEE KARI MUNINAA EE SIRU, KAHA KARA JORI BAHORI|CHARANA SARORUHA NAATHA JANI, KABAHUN TAJAI MATIMORI| It means "I am making this humble request with my folded hands never-ever abandon me from your feet by changing my mind".

Om Atrimaharishbhyon Namaha,

Yours yogically,

Shreeram Balijepalli
